Back in the stocks this week at Twemlows.

Rebecca (Resident Vet) and Megan (Stocks Manager) were busy scanning our Recipient mares, who have been on light stimulation (Artificial Phototrophic Stimulation) since December and are now embryo-ready.

Artificial Phototrophic Stimulation uses carefully timed stable lighting to extend the “day” to around 14-16 hours of light. Starting in late Autumn and early Winter, this mimics the longer days of spring and gently adjusts the horse’s hormone cycle, particularly melatonin.

Within 8-12 weeks, mares typically begin cycling earlier and more productively, supporting a well-planned breeding season.

At Twemlows, our barn lights are timed to turn on at sundown and switch off at midnight, ensuring consistent and effective light exposure throughout the programme.

All recipients return from weaning to full veterinary health checks, a review of vaccinations, and regular hoof and teeth-care, alongside thorough reproductive exams by our specialist vet team.

In the last weeks, a foal came to us at Twemlows. Newly rejected by its biological mother, it had only been bottle-fed and limited to human interaction.

We had to find a foster mare, fast.

Enter our recipient mare, Clover. Having foaled her own last March and successfully fostered already in October, this mare stood out as a possible foster mother to the rejected foal.

Using gentle udder massage alongside a medication called Domperidone, we encouraged Clover to begin producing milk. In simple terms, Domperidone works by increasing levels of a natural hormone called Prolactin. Prolactin is the hormone responsible for milk production: by supporting this hormone, we can safely and effectively help a mare come into milk, even if she hasn’t just given birth.

Clover, a generous and experienced multiparous mare, took to her new role beautifully. It really seemed like “love at first sight” for her.

The foal, however, needed a little more time. Having been rejected by its biological mother at birth and bottle-fed since day one, learning to nurse from an udder was a completely new experience.

Thanks to the patience and dedication of our foaling team, stud manager, and vets, we gently taught the foal how to latch and nurse correctly. Over several days, confidence grew, instincts kicked in, and their bond strengthened.

We are delighted to say that they are now happily paired, fully bonded, and no longer need any additional assistance. Another resounding success for Clover: her second completed fostering. We are so pleased for her.

It is always incredibly rewarding to see teamwork, science, horsemanship, and compassion come together to give a foal the very best start in life.

Well done to all those involved!
