We were delighted to join our sister home in their oral health training! 🦷

Lorna delivered thorough and engaging training, including helpful videos and demonstrations of different oral care equipment and techniques. We explored how to adapt our approach depending on individual needs and behaviours, how to spot early signs of oral health concerns, which products to use, and who to inform if we have any worries.

Ongoing training like this ensures we continue to provide safe, effective, and person-centred care ....and it was a bonus that Lorna kindly left us with some of the products to use, along with mini toothpaste samples for the team!

The session was especially valuable for our newly appointed Oral Health Champion, Stacey. In her role, Stacey will act as the go-to person for oral health within the home, encouraging consistent daily mouth care routines and supporting staff to follow best practice guidance. 🪥

Love was in the air for our Valentine’s Day celebrations! ❤️

We set up a lovely display in the main lounge, complete with our Valentine’s letterbox. Residents enjoyed writing and receiving cards filled with kind words for one another. There was plenty of creativity too, from decorating heart-shaped cookies to making knitted hearts to hang on our decorative tree.

The love-themed fun continued at our local Friendship Cafe’s where residents enjoyed a singer, balloons, flowers, and a cheerful atmosphere!

Celebrating special occasions like this helps residents connect with the time of year, relate to different events, and enjoy social and sensory experiences, all supported by our staff to make sure everyone can take part and have fun!

We had a lovely time celebrating National Hedgehog Day! 🤎

Residents joined our Knit & Knatter ladies to make pom-poms, which we used to create a variety of hedgehogs for our notice board. The different textures made for an engaging sensory activity, enjoyed every time someone passed by.

We also learned some interesting hedgehog facts and watched a short video about these charming little creatures! 🦔

Our senior and management team recently took part in Dementia Jewels training. 💎

Dementia Jewels is a thoughtful approach to understanding the different stages of dementia, using “jewels” to represent how a person’s abilities and needs may change over time. It reminds us to see the person first , recognising strengths, emotions, and individuality, rather than focusing purely on a diagnosis.

Although we are not a dementia care home, we do sometimes support residents living with mild dementia. This training ensures our team feel confident and informed, with practical techniques that can be applied across the home to support a variety of needs.

The session introduced engaging activity ideas and interactive resources, including music and movement videos which we’ve since incorporated into our themed events, from clapping along to Scottish songs to a little Scottish chair dancing for our Burns night celebrations !

A big thank you to TLC Training for such an insightful session as always, we really value their guidance and expertise.

If you have a loved one living with dementia and ever need advice, reassurance or simply a conversation, please speak to a member of our senior team. We are always here to listen and support in any way we can. 🥰

We captured this lovely photo of the church recently and just had to share it. We’re so lucky to have such a beautiful church right opposite us here in Whitefield. ⛪️

All Saints’ Stand Church, is such a special part of our local community. It was built between 1821 and 1826 and is one of the Commissioners’ churches created to celebrate the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, which feels quite incredible when you think about the history it has seen.

The church was designed by Charles Barry and took just over 5 years to build which is quite incredible for a Church that size and with so much detailing. Built from millstone grit from the Pennines, it’s known for its fanciful Gothic style. It really does stand proudly as a landmark in our area.

We’re very grateful to have such a lovely relationship with the church. We often pop over to visit, and they always make us feel so welcome. They’ve even kindly displayed some of Rita’s artwork, which made us all incredibly proud.

It’s so nice to feel part of something with such deep roots in our community , and even nicer that it’s right on our doorstep! ✨

We’ve been keeping busy with some of our usual day-to-day activities that everyone enjoys! ✨

There’s been flower arranging, a few competitive throwing games, exercise ball games in the big lounge, and some relaxing nail care sessions with plenty of chatting in between.

At Whitefield House it's all about keeping active, spending time together, and doing little things that make the day feel good! ✨

We’ve continued keeping in close contact with our community throughout January . 🤝

It was lovely to welcome Anita and Glenda back for another “Knit and Knatter” session. The residents enjoyed making pom poms for their Hedgehog Day crafts, Sandra was especially pleased to see the ladies again and gifted them some flowers. 🌷

There have also been some lovely outings, with May even getting to watch her son perform at Merrie Melodies.🎻

The ladies have enjoyed a Pamper! Sandra treated herself to a facial and came away feeling very relaxed at the Woodthorpe friendship group, and residents have been enjoying their regular hair appointments with Sue too.🧖‍♀️

It’s always so nice to have family and friends visiting, whether it’s for a catch-up or to join in with activities.✨

We recently hosted our monthly residents meeting, and we kicked off the year starting with the topic of... healthy eating!🥒

Last year we started introducing a monthly theme into our meetings to encourage more meaningful engagement , learning and sometimes even a little activity alongside it. It's a lovely way to share with residents why we do certain things as a home, not just what we do.

For January, we talked about how we carefully curate our menus, why we always offer alternative choices to encourage choice, and why fresh fruit and vegetables are such an important part of our meals. We always have fresh produce available.🍊

Andrea spoke with everyone about the nutrients we get from different foods and how they help keep us strong and healthy.

There were some great discussions and feedback, residents have already requested avocado to try for next month's meeting! 🥑

We also included a little smoothie taste test... which, if we're being honest, wasn't the biggest hit 😅Maybe a different flavour next time!

As always, we shared upcoming February activities and themes making sure to have open communication with residents about what we are planning and listening to any feedback or additions to our plans. We always welcome any new staff or residents and ask residents if they continue to feel safe and happy within the home.

The information from our meetings is also shared with staff in our monthly staff newsletter. It's important that our team understands why nutrition, hydration, and even modified diets matter, helping prevent dehydration and malnutrition. Adding the topic of the months information to the newsletter's, encourages reminders to our team.

Our meetings are such an important part of life at Whitefield House. Open conversations, honest feedback (even about smoothies!), and making sure every voice is heard!

You'll find our residents' meeting dates and times through to June on the image attached. Family and friends are always very welcome to join us. (Please note dates may be subject to chanae.)* 🗓️

January was such a lovely, busy month 💚

After chatting through all the upcoming special days in our December residents' meeting, we kicked the year off with Sci-Fi Day with a themed baking session... any excuse to bake cookies! 🚀

It was also National Word Search Day, so we made sure to include the topics residents had mentioned in the meeting in preparation! We also bought extra-large font word search books for those with difficulty seeing. 🔎

With January being Vegan Month, we held a little afternoon taste-testing session. The vegan sausage rolls weren't the biggest hit, but the vegan cake bites definitely went down much better.

We also got creative making our own bird feeders ready for the Big Bird Watch we made them out of cardboard tubes, peanut butter, bird seed and string. Safe to say they were a success as we later spotted birds happily feeding from them. 🐦

National Puzzle Day brought out everyone's competitive side out!🧩

We finished the month celebrating Burns Night with Scottish chair dancing, a little haggis tasting which we received mixed reviews from the ladies... but a couple really loved it and said they'd try it again! We also watched and bagpipes playing on the TV for a musical finish to the day! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

It's always lovely seeing residents get involved, share their opinions, and try something new, even if it's just for a slice of cake.

Our Community 💛

We love getting out and about in our local community and staying connected with the wonderful groups around us! Each week, we visit several friendship groups, including The Goats Gate Get Together Group, The Oasis Centre for afternoon tea, Merrie Melodies singing group and The Woodthorpe Friendship Group. We enjoy live music, bingo, raffle prizes, and catching up with friends! If you’d like to join us on one of our group outings, please speak to a member of our team.

We also love welcoming the community into our home. Our popular Knitting and Knatter sessions with Glenda and Anita are always good fun, and we enjoy hosting church services for Holy Communion.

We’re also fortunate to receive regular visits from local schools. These multi-generational mornings are lovely, they inspire conversations, storytelling, and understanding between generations. For our residents they are able to share memories and experiences, while children learn about patience and kindness with the elderly. 💫

Our Recent Monthly Meetings!

We’ve been really enjoying our recent monthly resident meetings! Each month, we’ve introduced a ‘topic of the month’ that includes both an educational focus and a fun, interactive activity for everyone to get involved in.

Recent topics have included Hydration, Falls Prevention, and Seasonal Health & Flu Awareness, with our next session focusing on Oral Health.

💧 Hydration

We explored how much fluid we typically drink in a day versus how much we should be having, and discussed why staying hydrated is so important. Residents also got to try Jelly Drops — delicious sweets made up of 95% water!

3 Key Takeaways:
• Water helps keep our joints moving smoothly.

• It keeps our brains sharp.

• It supports healthy digestion.

🚶‍♀️ Falls Prevention

Using Age UK’s new exercise booklet, we focused on gentle mobility and strength. Residents also enjoyed a quiz and discussion around what we can do to improve our mobility.

3 Key Takeaways:
• Regular exercise helps us stay strong and independent.

• Wearing appropriate footwear reduces the risk of falls.

• Using walking aids correctly helps keep us safe.

🩺 Seasonal Health & Flu Awareness

We discussed the importance of the flu jab, good hand hygiene, and catching sneezes correctly! Residents joined in with a herbal tea tasting session too!

3 Key Takeaways:
• Regular hand washing and covering coughs/sneezes helps stop germs from spreading.

• If a resident shows symptoms, we may take precautions to protect others in the home.

• We kindly ask families to avoid visiting if they are unwell and to follow good hygiene practices.

We’re looking forward to next month’s meeting topic, Oral health 🦷
