🌎I genuinely believe that reading can help change the world for the better…
💚These are some of the books I would recommend to help children learn about different cultures, to build empathy and promote their emotional wellbeing.
🫶🏼Supporting children’s emotional wellbeing is crucial, and at times like this when things seem so divisive, it’s even more important to foster that sense of empathy and compassion.
📗Book 1 - The Fantastic Book of Feelings by Marcia Williams, is a book I used to read with some of the children I worked with in Key Stage 2 and have read with my eldest too. It covers a wide range of emotions, including anger and jealousy in an interesting and helpful way, with hints and ideas about how to work through these emotions as well as comic style stories.
📗Book 2 - My Name is Not Refugee by Kate Milner. This book offers a chance for the reader to consider what it would be like to have to leave their home, leave their friends and belongings behind and walk a long way. It is a brilliant example of how books can help us walk in someone else’s shoes…
📗Book 3 - Just Like You by Athina Gordon. I bought this years ago from This is Book Love and it’s been a family favourite ever since!
📗Book 4 - Welcome to our World by Moira Butterfield and Harriet Lynas. It’s a really gorgeous book with details of customs and traditions of children and families all over the world.
💚As a mixed heritage family it has always been really important to us to celebrate diversity and encourage empathy, and these books are a good start
I would love to hear your favourite books for little ones too… 💚🌎
