Late 2019 in November saw Sam Ward, a GB hockey player, sustain a horrible injury after playing against Malaysia.

After scoring twice in the game and looking for his third, Sam’s teammate took a short which hit in the head. The ball's speed was around 50mph as it reached Sam’s eye. After his surgery, Sam’s surgeon delivered devastating news that he had irreparable retina damage. This meant that he would sustain lifelong loss of sight in his one eye.

With hockey being Sam’s world, he didn’t want to lose the opportunity to play and represent his home country. He would later be authorised to use a sports protection mask for his games in order to protect both his head and eye from any future injuries.

Sam is now wearing his Raptor Mask to every game and trying his best to increase the awareness of using these masks in hockey.

If your child has trouble lifting their heel off the ground - they might have foot drop.

The most common cause of foot drop is nerve injury to the leg, foot or ankle. But it can also be caused by muscle weakness or a disorder of the nerve, brain, or spinal cord.

A doctor can diagnose foot drop with a physical exam, and recommend treatment and management.

A lightweight ankle and foot brace/orthoses like Piro, made especially for children, is one way you can prevent any further damage and support weak muscles in the ankles and feet.

The most important thing is getting prompt clinical help to help give children the support and freedom to play as they should.

Learn more about foot drop in our article here. ⬇️
