Yoga has many balancing poses - these are good for us for many reasons. Apart from developing physical core stability, ( sooo important for all ages!), they help us find mental and emotional steadiness. Remaining steady and centered in a balancing pose improves focus and helps to relieve stress. This is because you have to stay concentrated and alert while trying not to wobble or fall 😊.

Here are some options for Hand to Big Toe pose. You can build up to more challenging options using a bent knee, a strap, or a wall for support. And yes, physically, It is good for working your leg muscles, knee joints, hip joints and it also offers a good hamstring stretch. Enjoy!πŸ’›πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ

As part of my yoga teacher training, I was tasked with keeping a daily gratitude journal. Writing down things I was grateful for each day had at first seemed like a chore, but soon developed into a habit that literally changed my life.

I moved beyond the negative thoughts and emotions that can come with a busy, stressful life of work and looking after others, to focusing on what I do have and what I can do (rather than what I don't have and can't do. )

But, even more powerfully, it helped me focus on my values. Values are those things that we consider important or beneficial in our lives. So, interestingly, my gratitude journalling was highlighting values that were completely free, attainable and best of all, brought feelings of happiness and positivity.

So, rather than valuing things like new shoes, holidays and expensive meals out, (as nice as those things are), I discovered that I was grateful for simple things like "watching my kids laugh together at the dinner table" (this is rare!), and, "quietly, enjoying my first cup of tea of the day", and " a nice little chat and connection with my colleague", which suggested different values. So, corny as it might sound, I realise these are the things I need to invite more of into my life, not the expensive, material things....and this is incredibly liberating actually.

So, I recommend gratitude journalling as a wonderful way to reconnect with YOU, and to discover what actually makes you tick. Because, who knows, if you're anything like me, you may completely surprise yourself πŸ’›πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ

Slowing down.

It's ok to slow down. In western society we somehow feel guilty if we're not always performing at our optimum. Nature offers us a sanctuary, a space where we can slow down, breathe deeply, and find solace. By immersing ourselves in the calming sights and sounds of the natural world, we can cultivate a sense of inner peace.

Slowing down allows us to reflect, gain clarity, and find harmony within ourselves. We become more focused, creative, and better equipped to tackle life's challenges.

So next time you're feeling physically, mentally or emotionally weary, take some time to stop, find somewhere in nature that calms and grounds you, breathe deeply and ask yourself what you need.

In this weeks' classes I wanted to reflect upon what trees mean to us as humans and why they are so important to us....

In addition to providing needs such as food, shelter, healing, and protection, trees have also played an important part in the spirituality of various groups of people and religions. In many cultures trees are considered representative of life, wisdom and growth.

So, What can we learn from trees?

Slowing Down

In winter, deciduous trees go through a process called dormancy, similar to hibernation. During this period of dormancy, the tree slows down growth and energy consumption and focuses on maintaining its health. Trees teach us that all living things require periods of deep rest. A period of rest allows us to reflect and prioritize, and to give care and attention to our essential needs.

Grounding us

Trees connect us to where we live. Our eyes are often drawn to them when we go outdoors and they can serve as landmarks and help us find our way. Many people consciously or subconsciously remember a place they visited by what trees were present and can have a feeling or memory come to mind when they see a tree

Letting go

Because trees don’t produce food during the winter, they don’t have enough energy to maintain their leaves.
Trees teach us that we must sometimes let go of unnecessary burdens and focus energy on what matters most.

Rooted in Community

In forests, tree roots intertwine, share resources, and support each otherβ€”they become a community of strength throughout the seasons. We can maintain community by reaching out and practicing compassion for one another. This results in us feeling more connected and valued.

There is a lot we can learn from TreesπŸŒ³πŸ’›

This quote stopped me in my tracks, making me wonder..... we may think we know how to love, but how much do we really? We may love our family and friends, but how good are we actually at it, as a skill? And what about towards acquaintances, strangers, the planet and, yes, ourselves....
Yogis believe we are all made from the same universal matter....so loving everything and everyone equally, is an important part of yogic philosophy. However, I, (along with many others I reckon) do not always find this easy....
So I challenge myself to practice it like I would any other skill - a little bit more patience, an extra dose of kindness, showing compassion instead of judgement...πŸ€”and then, as they say, practice makes, if not perfect, then at least progress πŸ˜ŠπŸŒ±πŸœπŸ πŸ‘¬
