In the last month l have had the honour of helping two families who are going through the toughest of all losses….their children (who were only twenty and thirty-seven respectively….)
I hadn’t been the celebrant for anyone under fifty before this and have been amazed at the way these parents have dealt with all the arrangements, questions, paperwork etc with such dignity, resilience and even humour. So inspiring.
They taught me that when you don’t know what to say to bereaved parents, honesty really is the best policy.
You may feel helpless and want to avoid saying the wrong thing or causing more upset…but the truth is, if you have good intentions and speak with kindness, you won’t go far wrong.
