One thing I’ve learned working with children…
therapy doesn’t work if it doesn’t feel safe 💛

That’s why I don’t expect children to fit into a set way of working.
I fit around them.

If they love Minecraft, we use Minecraft.
If it’s Barbie, Pokémon, football, drawing… we use that.

Because when something feels familiar and fun, children relax.
And when they relax, they start to open up.

If a technique doesn’t land or feels “too much”, I don’t push it I adapt it, reshape it, and make it work for that child.

Therapy should never feel like pressure.
It should feel like a space where they can just be themselves.

FRIDAY REMINDER

By Friday, a lot of people are running on empty.

Children who’ve held it together all week at school.
Teenagers whose brains haven’t switched off for days.
Parents who have been juggling everything for everyone.

So if things feel a little emotional, tense, or overwhelming today… that’s often just a tired nervous system.

One small thing that can really help tonight:

Slow the evening down.

It doesn’t have to be anything big.
A quiet cup of tea.
A short walk.
Ten minutes without phones.
Or simply sitting together without pressure to talk.

Sometimes the nervous system just needs a signal that it’s safe to relax again.

Quick question…

What helps you calm your mind when life feels overwhelming?

Is it:

• A walk
• Music
• Talking to someone
• Quiet time
• Something else?

Phobias aren’t actually about the thing people fear.

It might look like someone is scared of:

• spiders
• flying
• vomiting
• driving
• dogs
• small spaces

But underneath it’s usually the brain saying:

“What if I can’t escape?”
“What if something bad happens?”
“What if I lose control?”

The brain is trying to protect.

The problem is it sometimes gets a bit overprotective.

The positive side of that is the brain can also learn a calmer response.

This might be you…

You look like you’re coping on the outside.
You get on with work, family life, responsibilities.

But inside your mind is constantly busy.

Overthinking conversations.
Worrying about things that haven’t even happened.
Feeling tense for no clear reason.
Struggling to properly switch off.

Or maybe your child or teenager is the one who seems overwhelmed big worries, low confidence, struggling with emotions.

These things are more common than people realise.

At Willow Therapies, I work gently with both adults and young people.

Sometimes we talk things through.
Sometimes we use hypnotherapy.
Often it’s a blend of approaches with CBT techniques too.

Every person is different, so sessions are always tailored to the individual.

If this post made you quietly think
“that sounds a bit like me”…

Sometimes people think hypnotherapy is only for one specific problem… but actually, it can help with so much more.

I work with adults who are struggling with things like anxiety, fears or phobias, low confidence, overthinking, stress, sleep difficulties, or just feeling a bit stuck.

Every person is different, which is why sessions at Willow Therapies are tailored to you.

Some people need space to talk things through.
Others benefit from hypnotherapy to help calm the nervous system and change unhelpful patterns.

Often, it’s a gentle mix of hypnotherapy alongside CBT techniques that works really well helping you understand why you feel the way you do, while also giving your mind the chance to properly relax and reset.

Change doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or rushed.
Sometimes it just starts with having the right support.

If you’re wondering whether therapy could help, I’m always happy to have a friendly chat first 🤍

Sometimes the simplest things really do help… even when they sound a bit too simple.

Taking three slow deep breaths can actually tell the brain and body that it’s safe to calm down.
When we’re stressed or anxious, breathing becomes fast and shallow which keeps the nervous system on high alert.

Slow breathing does the opposite.
It gently presses the body’s “calm button.”

But let’s be honest…

If you tell a teenager “just take some deep breaths” there’s a good chance you’ll get:

👉 “I’m not doing that.”
👉 “That’s cringe.”
👉 Or an eye roll strong enough to shake the house.

So instead, try this.

Don’t make it a “technique.”

Sit with them while watching TV.
Go for a short drive.
Walk the dog together.
Even just sit quietly in the same room.

Your breathing naturally slows when you feel safe and teenagers often regulate through being alongside someone calm, not being told what to do.

Sometimes modelling calm works far better than instructions.

And later on, when things feel less intense, you can gently explain how breathing helps the brain settle.

If your child melts down after school,
or your teenager goes quiet and shuts their door,
or you find yourself snapping when you didn’t mean to…

It doesn’t always mean something is “wrong”.

Sometimes it just means the nervous system is tired.

One small thing you can try tonight:

Instead of asking lots of questions,
just sit nearby.

Fold laundry.
Make a cup of tea.
Be in the same space without pressure.

Safety often grows in silence, not solutions.

You don’t have to fix everything.
Connection first. Always.

You know your child better than anyone… so if something feels off, it’s worth listening to that instinct.”

As a mum of four, I know how easy it is to second-guess yourself and wonder if your child will “grow out of it.” But sometimes children need a little extra support and that’s okay.

Alongside my professional training, I have both personal and hands-on experience supporting children and teenagers, including those with ADHD, ASC, sensory processing differences, and dyslexia.

At Willow Therapies, I help young people with:

• Anxiety
• Fears and phobias
• Low confidence
• Emotional overwhelm
• School worries
• And more

I use a gentle blend of hypnotherapy and CBT techniques, always tailored to your child’s personality and needs. There is no one-size-fits-all approach here just calm, understanding support.

🌿 I offer a free telephone consultation with parents first, so you can talk openly and see if I feel like the right fit.

To make that first visit easier, there’s also a social story on my website, helping children know exactly what to expect before they arrive.
