EMDR is a structured therapy that helps your brain process difficult experiences in a safer, more manageable way. It has eight stages, and you move through them at a pace that feels right for you.
.Getting to know you – You’ll begin by sharing your story, what’s been difficult, and what you’d like to feel different. This stage focuses on building trust and understanding.
.Preparation and safety – Before working with distressing memories, you’ll learn grounding and calming tools to help you feel supported and in control.
.Choosing a focus – Together, we’ll gently identify a memory or experience to work on, along with the thoughts, feelings, and body sensations linked to it.
.Processing – Using eye movements or tapping, your brain processes the memory in a new way, often reducing its emotional intensity.
.Strengthening helpful beliefs – As distress eases, we’ll strengthen more supportive beliefs, such as “I’m safe now” or “I can cope.”
.Body awareness – We’ll check in with your body and gently process any remaining tension or discomfort.
.Closing safely – You’ll leave feeling settled and supported, with tools to help you between sessions if anything comes up.
.Reviewing progress – We’ll reflect on changes, notice progress, and decide together what feels right to focus on next.
EMDR works with your brain’s natural ability to heal. You don’t have to relive everything or push yourself — we move at a pace that feels right for you
