💚 World Mental Health Day 💚

Today is a powerful reminder that our mental health deserves as much care and compassion as our physical health.

As women, we often juggle so much — caring for others, managing change, navigating the ups and downs of hormones, midlife, and menopause. It’s easy to forget to check in with ourselves. 🌿

Whether it’s through movement, stillness, a massage, a mindful skincare ritual, or simply taking a few deep breaths — these small acts of self-kindness can restore balance and bring calm back to our busy minds. ✨

I see daily how connection, touch, and self-care help women feel grounded again — body, mind, and soul. 💆‍♀️
So today, I invite you to pause. Ask yourself: “What do I need right now?”
Then give yourself permission to honour that need.

Because looking after your mental health isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. 💚

Many of you here will remember that I lost my Mum to Dementia. Cardio vascular disease is a 'thing' in my Mum's side of the family and something that I've studied to help me 'dial down' my own genetic risk.
AND you know that if you still make it to any of the classes whether online or in the hall on Thurs mornings in Sanderstead that I will push you that little bit more to get you out of breath AND yes I make you use weights. BUT there's always been a good reason.
NOW there is THIS 👇 a whopping 44 year long study of WOMEN in Sweden. It makes compelling reading - here's the link to the whole study or if you want the key highlights click on the images below. xx

‼ SKCIN were asked to contribute to an article published by The Sun today addressing anti-SPF supporters and misinformation - here’s what we had to say:

“The rise in anti-SPF supporters, driven by misinformation on social media is a mammoth concern. This damaging content is influencing a younger generation who are highly susceptible to sun damage and is further fuelled by tanning trends and tan acceleration products. Sadly, such misinformation is without doubt going to cost lives.

As a charity that has worked tirelessly for almost 20 years now to raise awareness of prevention following the loss of a loved one to melanoma, this is incredibly sad to witness.

The facts are clear. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and it is 90% preventable by using sun protection measures. The use of SPF 30+ broad spectrum sunscreen when the UV Index is 3 or above is a critical prevention method as well as covering up with clothing, including a sun hat and sunglasses–and seeking shade during peak UV hours.”

Despite the above - there are also a number of other factors contributing to the consistent rise in skin cancer cases…

“Firstly we are still seeing the affects of a generation that knew-little-to-nothing about skin cancer causes, risk factors and prevention measures up until relatively recently. Skin cancer can take many years to develop and that risk increases with age due to cumulative exposure and damage done in our younger years. The boom in package holidays is still taking its toll and with an ageing population, the ongoing rise in cases is inevitable.

Secondly, the increase in awareness of the signs and symptoms of skin cancer is thankfully driving people to seek medical attention, resulting in more cases diagnosed in their early stages.

However, the increase in sunbed use (particularly in the younger generation) is also sadly fuelling the rapid rise in cases–highlighting the important role of awareness and education in combatting this largely preventable disease”.

🧡 Education is key! Prevention and early detection SAVES LIVES!

Alrighty then - skin cancer awareness month. Let's start by well and truly BUSTING some common myths.

Myth - you can only burn in the summer
Truth - our skin is exposed to UV rays all year round

Myth - You can't get sunburnt inside OR in the shade
Truth - UV rays cna pass trough leaves, branches windows and clouds

Myth - You only need to apply sunscreen once a day
Truth - when you're exposed to the sun reapply at least every 2 hours

Myth - You need to be in the heat fo the sun to get your Vitamin D
Truth - Whislt there's no 'one size fits all' for Vitamin D production in the skin it can effeciently and sufficiently be produced in around 10-20 mins a day from doses of UV below those which cause reddening of the skin or sunburn

Myth - using a sunbed will prepare/protect the skin before going abroad.
Truth - Research has proved that sunbeds ive out the sam eharmful UV rays as the sun BUT at much greater intensity. The can cause premature aging, sagging, wrinkling and blotching

I'll be back tomorrow with your 5 S approach to sun safety.

Why Thrive?

In 2016 sugar became the enemy, low fat meant gain fat and Joe Wicks declared that by weighing ourselves we were stepping on to the sad step. It also saw the launch of an exciting local community lifestyle and fitness club, Thrive!

Created by Lesley Birkett-Cameron, Thrive helps you to learn and understand the importance of good nutrition. How it can help you feel comfortable in your own skin, feel energised to tackle those everyday challenges and to lose inches to regain body confidence. Lesley believes we need to stop judging ourselves based on the number on the scales.

Having provided community nutrition and fitness classes for 11 years, Lesley understands that losing weight is not about starving yourself. Her personal and professional experience has led her to create the Thrive Nutrition Plans. She is passionate about helping others to take care of themselves. She says “I meet so many women who get so busy taking care of others that they forget that they are important too.”

At Thrive, fitness is also important as Lesley embraces the ever evolving styles of fitness, providing a wide variety of fun classes with something for everyone. All classes can be adapted to suit all ages and abilities, encouraging members to try something new and to challenge their bodies in a different way.
