Smoke alarms saved lives in Loughton this morning 👆

A kitchen fire broke out early today after a vacuum cleaner left on charge caught alight.

Thankfully, working smoke alarms activated quickly, giving the occupants vital early warning. Everyone got out safely and called 999.

Watch Manager Glenn Jackson said:

“This incident shows just how important working smoke alarms are. Because the smoke alarms activated at the first sign of the fire, the occupants were able to get out quickly and call 999, which prevented the fire from causing more serious damage.”

New advice is that all main used rooms (including bedrooms) have smoke alarms for exactly this reason. This is new advice published just a few weeks ago, following research and national statistics……

Over Christmas and the New Year, several house fires across the country have led to tragic loss of life, including children. Families and communities have been left grieving after fires took hold while people were at home and asleep.

It’s a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly fire can spread - and how vital early warning is.

Smoke alarms save lives, but one alarm is not enough. Fires often start in living rooms, bedrooms or kitchens, and national figures show that in around a third of house fires, smoke never reached an alarm in time.

Please take a few minutes to check your home:
🔥 Make sure your smoke alarms are working
🔥Make sure you have enough alarms to cover your whole home, not just one per level

Having enough working smoke alarms could give you and your loved ones the time needed to escape.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the fires over the festive period.

✨Why not make volunteering your New Year’s resolution! ✨

Start 2026 by making a real difference in your community. Our volunteers are ordinary people who do something extraordinary in their spare time – and you can too!

We have a range of roles to suit different interests and skills, these include:

✅ Community engagement group member – Help us improve services as one of our ‘critical friends’. They help identify ways of improving services and support with a range of activities.

Have you got a working smoke alarm?
Make checking it a weekly/monthly routine…….

Firefighters are highlighting the importance of working smoke alarms after a family were alerted to a fire in their flat overnight.

Crews were called at 1.30am this morning (Sunday, January 4) to a first-floor flat on Leicester Road, Tilbury, after a smoke alarm alerted the occupants.

Station Manager Mat Bannon said: “The smoke alarms really made a difference and gave that early warning. Sadly the flat was badly fire damaged, but it could have been much worse.”

Working smoke alarms save lives. We fit them for free and can also carry out a home fire safety check. Search Essex Fire Book to find out more.

Important Winter Road Safety advice from our colleagues at EEAST……

❄️❄️ We hope everyone has enjoyed the snow! Whether it was watching from the window on a cosy couch or braving the cold to build a snowman. ⛄️

However, if you’re having to head out for work or other essential journeys, please drive to the conditions and take extra care and time on your journey.

The snow and icy conditions are expected to continue tonight and tomorrow, with below freezing temperatures overnight so please keep warm, keep safe and enjoy the snow safely! ❄️

Thank you to Cheryl for the photo - , like all our emergency service colleagues are out in all weathers.
