Why Training Matters for UX Designers in Healthcare
In today’s fast-changing healthcare landscape, UX designers are no longer just shaping digital interfaces—they’re shaping how patients, clinicians, and caregivers experience healthcare itself. Training and continued professional development are critical for designers who want to stay ahead of this responsibility.

Why Training is Essential:
Healthcare systems are adopting AI, digital health records, telemedicine, and connected medical devices at an unprecedented rate.

For UX designers, this requires:
✅ Understanding clinical workflows to reduce friction for clinicians.
✅ Designing for accessibility so patients of all abilities can engage.
✅ Navigating regulation and compliance while keeping interfaces intuitive.
✅ Applying data ethics in increasingly AI-driven healthcare tools.

Without ongoing training, UX professionals risk falling behind the technical, regulatory, and ethical challenges of healthcare innovation.

Challenges Healthcare Needs UX to Solve:
➕ Complexity of digital health apps: Too many tools overwhelm patients and providers.
➕ Clinician burnout: Poorly designed systems add to administrative burden.
➕ Equity in digital care: Not all patients have equal access to technology or literacy.
➕ Fragmentation of care: Designers must ensure systems talk to each other.

Why Community Matters:
No designer can solve these challenges alone. By connecting with fellow UX professionals, clinicians, and product leaders, you not only gain fresh perspectives—you build collaborations that accelerate progress. Networking at events like UX Healthcare Berlin gives you direct insight into what’s working (and not working) globally.

❤️‍🩹 Together, we can make healthcare simpler, safer, and more human-centered.

How UX designed around clinician behaviours and needs can support strategic priorities.

When we talk about digital transformation in healthcare, the spotlight often falls on patient-facing tools. But what about the clinicians who deliver care every day?

Laura Smith's work with NHS hospitals highlights how designing digital services around the behaviours, workflows, and needs of clinicians doesn’t just improve their experience—it drives strategic outcomes for the healthcare system.

By co-designing remote care services with clinical teams, they uncovered:
✅ Better alignment with existing clinician workflows
✅ More holistic patient insights before appointments
✅ Reduced friction in accessing critical data
✅ Strategic efficiency gains at a system-wide level

This approach demonstrates a key principle of UX in healthcare: when you design for the clinician, you indirectly improve care quality, patient experience, and organisational outcomes.

💡 Takeaway: UX in healthcare isn’t just about making interfaces usable—it’s about designing with the people who deliver care, ensuring solutions fit into their daily reality while supporting broader system goals.

👉 What do you think—should clinician-centred design be the first step in digital health transformation strategies?

We’re thrilled to announce Preetha Moorthy as a speaker at UX Healthcare Berlin 2025!

Preetha brings a wealth of experience at the intersection of UX, Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), and healthcare regulation. Her session, “Lessons from the Field: Usability (Engineering) in Regulated Healthcare”, dives into one of the most critical issues in medical design today: how usability directly impacts patient safety, efficiency, and compliance.

Why does this matter?
🩺 Poorly designed medical devices can put patients at risk.
📉 Clinical trial dropout rates and errors often link back to usability issues.
⚖️ Regulators like the FDA and EMA require usability engineering aligned with IEC 62366-1 standards.

Preetha’s talk shares real-world insights from her work as a usability engineer, consultant, and research associate, where she has collaborated with both start-ups and global corporations.
She’ll explore:
✔️ The persistent challenges in applying UX within medical device development
✔️ How regulatory pressures shape design decisions
✔️ Why user access and context are often overlooked in traditional performance metrics

This is a must-attend session for designers, clinicians, researchers, and innovators who want to understand how good design isn’t just about usability—it’s about saving lives.

👉 Join us in Berlin and hear Preetha’s powerful insights first-hand.

🌍 Why UX Healthcare Is Different

The UX Healthcare brand has grown into a leading global platform, bringing together healthcare and design professionals across continents.

Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Atlanta, and Singapore – trusted by diverse communities to connect UX design and healthcare.

Clinicians + Designers + Product Owners – a unique mix of expertise not found at other events. Thought Leadership – from pharma to startups, our conferences spotlight real-world case studies, tools, and innovation. This isn’t just another UX event. It’s a space where better design can save lives.

📱 From Complexity to Clarity – Why Health Apps Are Failing Their Users
Health apps promise accessibility, empowerment, and better outcomes, but many fail to deliver. Studies show: Retention rates are low – 25% of users abandon health apps after just one use. Interfaces are too complex – clutter and jargon overwhelm patients instead of helping them.

Accessibility is lacking – only 30% of health apps meet basic accessibility standards, excluding older adults and people with impairments. Data isn’t actionable – tracking alone isn’t enough; users need guidance on next steps.

👉 The opportunity: UX in healthcare can close this gap. With empathetic, inclusive, and clear design, we can transform health apps into tools that genuinely improve lives.

This is exactly the type of conversation happening at UX Healthcare Berlin 2025.

Beyond the Patient: Creating Digital Tools for the Caregiver Journey:

When we talk about healthcare design, the focus often rests squarely on the patient. But behind every patient is a caregiver — a spouse, child, parent, or friend — whose journey is equally shaped by healthcare systems.

Research shows that caregivers often face high levels of stress, fragmented information, and limited access to support. Digital tools designed for them are no longer a “nice-to-have” but a critical element in holistic healthcare design.
From medication tracking apps to digital communities that provide guidance and emotional support, caregiver-focused tools help bridge gaps between healthcare professionals and at-home care. When caregivers are empowered, patients benefit too: reduced errors, better treatment adherence, and improved outcomes.

As UX professionals, we must ask:
How can we design inclusive tools that serve caregivers as well as patients?
How do we ensure usability under stress, when caregivers may be emotionally overwhelmed?
And how can we embed empathy and evidence-based design to make these tools practical, accessible, and truly supportive?

At UX Healthcare Berlin 2025, these conversations go beyond buzzwords. Together, we’ll explore how design can redefine the caregiver journey and contribute to a more sustainable healthcare ecosystem.
