Let's talk inflammation!
There are many foods that cause inflammation in the body
Sugar
Consuming too much sugar has been linked to obesity, insulin resistance, increased gut permeability and inflammation. Foods high in added sugar include candy, chocolate, soft drinks, cakes, cookies, doughnuts, sweet pastries, and certain cereals. Eating too much sugar can also counteract the
anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids
Artificial Trans Fats
Theyโre created by adding hydrogen to unsaturated fats, which are liquid, to give them the stability of a more solid fat.
Margarine contains trans fats, its also added to processed foods to extend shelf life, French fries, fast foods, packaged cakes & cookies, and all fast foods that list partially hydrogenated vegetable oil on the label.
Naturally occurring trans fats found in dairy & meat aren't known to cause inflammation or disease increase in a healthy diet, (but there are studies to show dairy does cause inflammation & acne when consumed in large amounts, cheeses, full fat dairy etc) unlike man-made trans fats which do cause inflammation & disease.
Vegetable and seed oils
Many of these oils have a high amount of omega 6 in them. The body needs omega 6 but our Western diets have a huge amount of omega 6, which we don't need and this promotes inflammation in the body
Refined carbohydrates
Not all carbs are bad! Ancient humans consumed unprocessed carbohydrates in the forms of grass, roots & fruits.
Refined carbohydrates have had most of their fibre removed. Refined carbs in the modern diet encourage the growth of inflammatory gut bacteria that increases the risk of obesity and inflammatory bowel disease. They raise blood sugar levels and promote inflammation. Refined carbohydrates are found in bread, pasta, pastries, cereals, cakes, cookies and all processed foods that contain added sugar & flour.
Excessive alcohol
The more alcohol consumed, the higher inflammation markers are. People who consume a large amount of alcohol can develop problems with bacterial toxins moving out of the colon and into the body. This can cause "Leaky gut" and can drive widespread inflammation through the body causing damage & disease.
Processed meat
Consuming processed meat increases your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, stomach & colon cancer.
Processed meats include sausage, bacon, ham, smoked meats and beef jerky. Processed meats are high in inflammatory compounds that are strongly associated with colon cancer due to the inflammatory response
