Not Your Typical Saturday Night…

While most people were out with friends or watching the latest Netflix release, I spent my Saturday night doing something a little different - customising an AAC device whilst listening to my two dogs play-fighting in the background. Not very rock and roll, I know! 🎸🤘🏼

But here’s the thing: this work is so important! Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) gives children a way to express themselves, and customising it means making it truly their own. 💫 Every child deserves to have their unique voice heard - whether that’s through words, symbols, or even emojis!

It’s not just about programming buttons; it’s about empowering children to connect with the world in a way that’s meaningful to them. Maybe they need a button for “I love dinosaurs,” or a quick way to tell their friends, “Let’s play football!” Whatever their needs, AAC is a bridge to independence, confidence, and connection🫸🏼🫷🏿

So, while my Saturday may not have been glamorous, it was incredibly rewarding. Every button pressed is a step closer to giving a child their voice 💬

🥳 Let’s celebrate every child’s voice - because every child has something amazing to say!

Knowing the months of the year is an essential life skill, and it's easy to take for granted the ability to order them. It's easy to forget that this skill is critical in making sense of time and the world around us. It helps you to know if that old tin in your cupboard is still safe to eat, how many paydays you have until Christmas and when your upcoming hospital appointment is scheduled.

One of my pupils had difficulties with this skill (see quotes and oval picture). After discussing seasonal changes and exploring memory strategies over the past two sessions, today he confidently and independently ordered the months of the year, correctly identified the corresponding seasons. I'm proud of his progress, and he was thrilled to exclaim, "Eeeeasy!" It's amazing to see the impact that a little guidance and practice can have on someone's life skills.

Ribbet and Teddy have been working hard to improve their /s/ blends and eliminate cluster reduction. After achieving their individual goals at the word level, they have now moved up to the phrase level. Today, they used magnetic letters to make up several target words, and I added starter phrases containing their substituted sound to challenge them further. To keep things interesting, a simple abacus was introduced and the pupils 'raced' to be the first one to reach 50 correct productions. The result? A motivated and engaged group! 🧮

Here at a Pinch of SaLT, we understand that as parents and guardians it can be worrying if your child is not meeting their language and communication milestones, or has a persistent, specific, speech or language difficulty that is impacting on their confidence, wellbeing or academic progress.

Sometimes, children need additional help than what is available. This is why, due to growing demand in our local area, whilst we continue to support schools, we are pleased to now offer intensive and specialist 1:1 private therapy in our new, warm and inviting clinic for children and their families too!

Therapy should be meaningful and FUN! We love play-based therapy and variety of resources and toys are sure to capture your child’s interests. Don’t worry if your older child is ‘too cool for school’ for the main office though, we have them covered too with modern and cosy spaces right next door!

If you would like to know more please visit our website www.apinchofsaltslc.com.

Please note, that as parents and carers, your involvement and co-operation is invaluable as therapy is most effective when we work together to support your child.

Our clinic is based in Widnes, which is easy access for Halton, Warrington and Knowsley residents.

Thank you,
Jessica (Cert.MRCSLT, Reg.HCPC)
