Leatherjackets (the larvae of crane flies or commonly known as daddy longlegs) can cause serious damage to lawns.
These small, grey-brown grubs live in the soil and feed on grass roots, leading to yellow patches, thinning turf, and in severe cases, large dead areas. You might also notice birds pecking at your lawn—this is often a sign they’re feeding on the larvae.
Leatherjackets are most active in autumn and spring, so it’s important to keep an eye out for early signs of damage. Healthy lawn care and timely treatment can help prevent them from taking over.
If your lawn is looking patchy or weak, leatherjackets could be the cause 🌱
