Spent the day with the great team at Trelleborg Group Marine Systems Ltd,(Hawarden, Deeside) running AED training sessions as part of their International Safety Day.

We tied the sessions in with the International Restart a Heart campaign, giving everyone the confidence to use an AED and perform CPR — skills that genuinely save lives.

At one point, I could have sworn the training mannequins had moved between sessions… proof, perhaps, that the AED training really does work!

A fantastic group to work with, fully engaged and committed to safety.

I’m proud to be supporting a large organisation this week as part of the Restart a Heart campaign.

Throughout the day, I’ll be delivering demonstrations on how to carry out CPR and use an AED. These are vital skills that can make all the difference in an emergency.

This campaign is very personal to me. I’ve experienced a situation where CPR played a crucial role – an event that changed my life and influenced the career I have today. It’s a big part of why I’m so passionate about helping others learn these skills.

You never know when you might need to use CPR. Taking the time to learn it could one day save someone’s life.

If your staff or organisation would benefit from similar CPR and AED training, please contact me at OHSS.

World Mental Health Day 2025 | Turning Awareness Into Action
Eight years ago, I was diagnosed with depression. It was triggered by stress and how poorly my wellbeing was managed in the workplace. I have lived it, been through it, and I still manage it every day. The difference is I have learned how to manage it.
That experience drives me now as a trainer at OHSS, where we believe mental health is just as important as physical health. Just as health and safety is non-negotiable in the workplace, so too is psychological wellbeing.
HSE statistics show that in 2023/24, nearly half of all work-related ill health in Great Britain was linked to stress, depression, or anxiety. On average, each affected worker took 20 days off, costing businesses in absence, productivity, and turnover.
This World Mental Health Day, we are asking employers to go beyond raising awareness and take real action. Even small changes such as reviewing workloads, improving communication, or giving staff more autonomy can make a huge difference.
At OHSS | Occupational Health & Safety Solutions, we provide accredited Mental Health Training Courses to help organisations recognise, respond, and embed wellbeing into their safety culture.

A company and its director have been fined after a man fell from scaffolding and died.

Mr Iftikhar Ahmed Mughal, 64, died four days after falling from an unguarded platform when he was installing a shop sign in Darwen, Lancashire.

The fall of just six feet proved fatal due to serious head injuries.

His son Asad said: "My father was like a roof to the family, and since his death, I and my siblings have felt alone. He always supported us in everything we did."

Our investigation found that WH Metals Limited failed to prevent the risk of a fall from the unguarded platform.

HSE Inspector David Hobbs said: "Work at height remains one of the leading causes of workplace injury and death.

"In this case, a fall of six feet was enough to cause a death, highlighting the dangers."

Simple guardrails around the platform could have prevented this tragedy. HSE guidance on working at height is available on our website.

"What inspired the founding of your training company?"

After working in health and safety for over two decades across industries like construction, leisure, tourism, property maintenance, and asbestos removal, I saw a real need for practical, effective training that actually helps people stay safe—not just tick boxes. That’s what inspired me to start OHSS. I wanted to make safety training more accessible, engaging, and impactful for businesses of all sizes.

"Can you describe the range of courses you offer and their target audiences?"

At OHSS, we offer a wide range of accredited training courses, including IOSH, First Aid, Fire Safety, and Manual Handling, among others. Our courses are designed for everyone—from frontline workers to managers—across industries like construction, social housing, and facilities management. We tailor the training to suit each client’s needs, whether it’s on-site, online, or in the classroom.

"How do you ensure the quality and relevance of your training programs?"

We’re accredited to deliver nationally recognized qualifications, and we regularly review our content to keep up with changes in legislation and best practice. I personally make sure that every course we offer is practical, up-to-date, and directly relevant to the people taking it.

"What sets your company apart from other training providers in the industry?"

Having worked hands-on in health and safety across multiple industries—both here in the UK and overseas—I bring real-world experience to every training session. I understand the day-to-day challenges businesses face because I’ve been there myself. This allows me to deliver training that’s not just theoretical but grounded in practical solutions. I share real scenarios, give actionable advice, and help learners see how to apply what they’ve learned in their own workplaces. That real-world relevance is what sets us apart.

"How do you incorporate feedback from participants to improve your courses?"

Feedback is everything to us. After every course, we gather participant insights and use that to continuously improve our delivery. One of the most common things we hear is that even the most challenging topics feel approachable and useful. That’s what we aim for every time.

"Can you share a success story from a participant who benefited from your training?"

One of the stories that stands out is from a long-term client who uses our training for cohorts of trainee teachers. They said our sessions were consistently well received and that even the more technical content was delivered in a way that was both clear and engaging. It’s that kind of feedback that keeps us passionate about what we do.

Another participant shared, "Brian’s IOSH Managing Safely course was fantastic—clear, engaging, and full of practical tips. I had a great time and learned a lot. Highly recommended!"

A different attendee noted, "Brian is very good at engaging his learners, and conveying the information in a way that everyone is able to understand. Would highly recommend."

Additionally, a participant mentioned, "Brian made this really easy with his approach. Not the usual boring H&S you expect."

These testimonials highlight the positive impact our training has on participants, reinforcing our commitment to delivering engaging and practical health and safety education.

"What are the qualifications and experiences of your trainers?"

Our trainers are highly qualified professionals with hands-on experience in their respective fields. I’m a Chartered Member of IOSH, and we only work with instructors who bring real-world knowledge to the table. That combination of experience and accreditation ensures our clients get the best possible training.

"How do you stay updated with industry trends and incorporate them into your training?"

I make it a priority to stay current with industry developments—whether that’s through CPD, professional networks, or attending industry events. We also keep a close eye on changing regulations and emerging risks so that our training always reflects the latest thinking and practices.

"What support do you offer participants after they complete a course?"

We don’t just walk away after the course ends. We’re always available for follow-up questions, additional support, or guidance on implementing what was learned. Many of our clients continue working with us for audits, risk assessments, or further training.

"What are your future goals and plans for expanding your training offerings?"

Looking ahead, I want to grow OHSS by expanding our online learning options and introducing more specialized courses that meet the evolving needs of our clients. Our goal is to be a go-to provider for practical, reliable, and engaging safety training—no matter the size or scope of your business.

"Thankyou Brian in sharing about your company!"
