Our advocates for parents with learning disabilities often work closely with professionals across health and social care. That’s why feedback like this from an NHS colleague means so much:

🗣️ *"Your advocate is fantastic! He was brilliant and so supportive of ****. I look forward to working with him again."

Thank you for recognising the impact of our team

We were so proud of our band, The Embraceables, who performed at their first festival last weekend. They got an amazing review, which we'd love to share with you:

First up are local band The Embraceables, introduced by bass player Mick with a quote from Tom Petty that music “isn’t supposed to be perfect…it must come from the soul”. And the band completely embody this ethos, with three vocalists, Kieran, Dane and Tiff, giving their all and delivering emotional, soulful and committed performances, supported by Tiff and Maria on guitars and Adam behind the kit, keeping a rock steady groove alongside bassist Mick.
It's a rousing eclectic set with everything from Oasis’ “Half A World Away”, to a version of White Rabbit where guitarist Tiff puts down the guitar and takes on vocal duties. There are also brilliant versions of Knockin On Heaven’s Door, my personal favourite Bad Moon Rising and a cracking Teenage Dirtbag to end. The Embraceables really do capture the spirit and heart of SKULLFEST25, of inclusivity and fun, that music should be for everyone, and in so doing set the tone perfectly for the day, kicking the musical proceedings off in fine style.

This week, our advocate Gail tell us why she loves working at Embrace:

I love my role in Care Act advocacy and parental advocacy because it allows me to stand alongside individuals and families during some of the most challenging times in their lives. Supporting people through assessments, reviews, or safeguarding concerns under the Care Act means I can help ensure their voices are heard, their rights are upheld, and their needs are genuinely understood.
Similarly, advocating for parents involved in child protection proceedings gives me the opportunity to empower them, helping them navigate complex systems . It’s deeply meaningful to be part of a process that can influence fairer, more compassionate outcomes, and I’m proud to contribute to making sure every person I support feels Respected, Informed, and Less alone.

We’re always looking for ways to improve our service and learn from lived experience.

One of our most popular workshops, Understanding ADHD, has been delivered for years by a team member who lives with the condition.

Last Friday, our colleague Sean, who is autistic, delivered his first Understanding Autism session to our team, based on his own experiences. It was fantastic, and we’re really looking forward to sharing it with you soon!

🚴♂️ Edinburgh to Wigan – 215 miles for Embrace! 💙

A huge thank you to Darren Haywood and Chris Taylor, who took on an epic 3-day charity bike ride from Edinburgh to Wigan (21st–23rd June), cycling over 6 hours a day through wind, rain, and tough conditions — all to support our SENDIASS and Mediation service. 🌬️☔

Both Darren and Chris have received support from our team in the past and wanted to give something back. Thanks to their incredible efforts, they raised an amazing £765! 🙌

They’ve also kindly offered to do some volunteer days with us soon, through their company.

We’re so grateful for your support — and for choosing to champion our work with local families. 💛

Today, we have a message from our Behaviour Support Coordinator, Andy Sampson. He's explaining why he chose to work at Embrace:

I had a tough childhood and many of my difficulties were not recognised as needing support but were seen as behaviour (or choice). Until I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, I believed this too.

I now understand that much of my struggles would have been better addressed with help (instead of punishment and discipline). I just needed the right support.

Before I worked in this field and as a parent to children with additional support needs, I benefitted so much from the help, advice and knowledge of other families - and even services like Embrace. As a parent I have learned to understand what good, individualised support looks like.

Working at Embrace allows me to continue to share my own lived experience with others and support other families in the way that we were supported ourselves.

Become a Personal Assistant! You’ll be directly employed by the person you support—helping with everyday tasks, getting out and about, or simply being a friendly, reliable presence in their life.

It’s meaningful work where you can build real connections and help someone live life on their own terms. No experience needed—just the right attitude and a willingness to help.
