🌼 Hayfever Season & Your Ears 👂

In the UK, hayfever season often begins in March and April as early tree pollens start to appear. While most people associate hayfever with sneezing and itchy eyes, it can also affect your ears.

Common ear-related symptoms include:

• Earache – Pollen can inflame the lining of the Eustachian tubes, causing pressure and discomfort.
• Itchy ears – Your immune system releases histamine when reacting to pollen.
• Blocked or muffled hearing – Swelling can stop the ears draining fluid properly.
• Ear infections (especially in children) – Allergy congestion can trap fluid in the middle ear, creating a breeding ground for bacteria or viruses.
👧🏾👦🏼 Children are more at risk because their Eustachian tubes are smaller and can block more easily.

As part of Tinnitus Week, we encourage anyone affected by tinnitus to see their GP and ask for a referral to their local NHS audiology department.

If tinnitus is impacting your daily life, a referral can help you access up-to-date, evidence-based support to manage or improve your symptoms. ❤️

Tinnitus Week runs from Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th February and we want to raise awareness of the support available for people experiencing tinnitus. Our Audiology Department offers dedicated tinnitus support and advice and our trained staff can carry out full hearing assessments, explain tinnitus mechanisms, and discuss evidence based tinnitus management options. Anyone experiencing tinnitus can access this service with a referral from their GP into the service.
