Hybrid Rehab

I believe that every single person has an untapped potential and purpose in this world and are capable of than far more than they realise and I believe that it all starts with a healthy, nourished body

On a daily basis I am privileged enough to work with a wide variety of people of all ages and ability's and help realise just how strong and capable they really are using a variety of different training styles i.e. pure strength, interval conditioning, yoga, strongman style, H.I.I.T, body-building and basic bodyweight conditioning

I don't believe one style is better than the other and that in order to reach your full potential as a human being and athlete you need a hybridization of it all

Now as for diet, nutrition etc. again I believe in a simple almost 'primitive' approach of good nutritious food and an eating protocol similar to our ancestors and everyone who has tried it has experienced reduced or complete lack of cravings, reduced body fat, improved energy, food and mood and subsequent improvements in the rest of their lives.

One of the biggest barriers to pain free movement, injury recovery and even neurological recovery, is excess tension in the system - this also impacts lymph and blood flow and IMO could not only hurt your biomechanics but your overall health too, but I digress…..

As a result I’m not a fan of anything that creates more tension, or puts a limb, joint or body in a weird position in an effort to isolate a particular structure - I prefer integration

The body is designed to work a one unit, generating and dissipating forces across the whole system to minimise risk and wear and tear on any one particular structure - something that can disrupted by pain, injury, disease, and sadly, training

People have enough tension and the last thing they need is more, they need to learn to open up, to flow, to absorb and release - that’s why I prefer drills like this to help nourish that neglected neurology and build mobility and function that lasts

Another simple drill to help open up your tight hips/back

The whole point of these drills is to teach the body it’s safe to open up the tissue and to keep that new range available by developing your capacity to control it

Excess tension in the system is a neurological response to a lack of control over the tissue - for example you might not be able to do the splits but if I knocked you out you could - the issue is that you lack control of the tissue/required ranges so as a safety precaution your body closes down those options

That’s why stretching, foam rolling, massage etc are all temporary measures because while they can certain be useful they don’t address the root cause, which is that most of us build competence is a very limited set of movements/ranges, eroding our ability to move and eventually even relax - we become balls of tension, ready to tear at any minute, cue unexpected movement outside of our normal gym patterns, injury, pain and so on

Luckily the answer isn’t that complex and you can begin to develop your neurology with zero equipment, minimal space and a small commitment of time, and it’s very scalable, meaning anyone can start doing it but it can also be progressed and incorporated into more demanding movements and workouts

The best athletes don’t just have well developed tissue, they have an extremely well developed neurological system too and know that too much tension will complete disrupt their ability to perform

KBs, flow and a bit of grip

20/10/2025

Adding some rhythm to your rehab, and/or training is an easy way to nourish the neurological often neglected by traditional gym training - helping you to keep moving well and counteracting the stiffness of training/life

Start with small movements, let it flow, increase the range, repeat

Great for all stages of rehab/prehab, just work where you can safely - but if you’re unsure - drop me a message

‼️Super simple drill, but dangerous for the uninitiated‼️

Start with meathead arm circles and go from there, start gentle and gradually built the intent/velocity

15/10/2025

Another simple dumbbell flow that will help loosen up your back and the rest of your body

The vast majority of pains/injuries, especially long standing issues, are caused by one thing - excess tension in the system

By incorporating some more ‘flowy’ movements/drills into your workouts, you will start to develop a capacity to switch between contraction and relaxation, gradually increasing the speed/velocity

Rehab/training doesn’t need to be complicated, just start swinging a dumbbell and let it flow

A cool little dude I get to work with every week

Riley’s story in words…

My 13-year-old son Riley sustained a T3 spinal cord injury following the removal of a tumour. We initially approached Nick to help Riley build confidence using gym equipment and to strengthen his upper body for wheelchair sports. What started as a simple goal has evolved into something far more transformative.

Nick is incredibly friendly, approachable, and patient.
He instinctively knows how to bring out the best in Riley, who is neurodivergent and can sometimes struggle with focus. Nick adapts each session to suit Riley’s mood, energy, and ability, keeping things engaging and tailored to his unique needs.

His deep understanding of neurological rehabilitation, combined with a creative and compassionate approach, has made a remarkable difference. Riley’s strength, motor skills, and self-belief have improved beyond anything we expected. Despite being told by healthcare professionals that regaining mobility wasn’t achievable, Nick has helped Riley - who is classified as paraplegic - to stand and complete his 1-to-1 sessions using a walking frame. That moment alone was something we never thought we’d witness.

We feel incredibly fortunate to have found Nick. In just one weekly session over the past few months, Riley has made progress we never imagined possible both physically and emotionally. The transformation in his strength, confidence, and mobility has exceeded all expectations. Hybrid Rehab has given us hope where we were told there was none, and we’re genuinely excited to continue this journey. Watching Riley thrive under Nick’s guidance is nothing short of inspiring, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Whatever your condition, no matter how bad it looks, no matter how many folks have said no, I’ll do everything I can to get you moving, even if I have to move you myself and jump start the muscle

Another game, another certificate and 5 more try’s - but that’s not why I’m proud

I’m proud because of how far he’s come, because he struggled so much, because he never quit no matter how tough it got or how gutted he was each week when it came to the awards

He’s spent hours in the gym, at the back of the house and out on runs, doing everything he can to get better, loving every minute

He plays his heart out, is there for his team, does anything he’s asked and on days like today it’s his heart that makes me so proud

He got a knock to the head pulling a player over twice his size down and a kick to the face tackling another, they were pretty bad but he cracked on, they all did, despite a really physical game and it was mint to watch

These past few games he’s really come on, again they all have, and all the hard work combined with some great coaching from Dave/Tom has come together and I am so excited to see what we can do with this winter arc

It’s cool to watch him progress in the gym vids and at the end there’s a few try’s from the past couple of games

I’ve spent the last decade studying exercise science, biomechanics etc and while it’s been valuable, my most valuable teacher has been PAIN

Of all the injuries I’ve had, my KNEE was definitely the most impactful and working around it for nearly 2 decades proper messed up my movement

I’m not sure how it happened but when I was 18 it began randomly swelling at least once a month and after a few years it just ached constantly, 5/10 was a great day

The prescription was lots of anti-inflammatory (which eventually damaged my kidneys) tiger balm, strength training and every type of knee support/brace possible

For 18 years I just accepted it, until a fellow rehabber advised I pay for a scan - torn meniscus, partially torn mcl/patella tendon and few cysts + a long awaited referral

I trained right up to the day before the op (think I pulled a 250 hex) then got straight on with rehab a Cpl of days after

At this point however I realised I was mangled and needed to adjust how I trained and started incorporating all sorts of different bits, started training with Alf, then the harriers throwers and thanks to those changes I’m moving better than ever, despite being at the fluffy end of a bulk

Do I wish I’d sorted it sooner? definitely, but dealing with it taught me everything I know about knee rehab/developing resilient knees and I’m proud of how much I achieved in spite of it

Pain/injury is one of the most value teachers you can have

Each ni**le, each overload, is an opportunity to learn, to adapt, overcome, and will make you stronger - if you frame it right

Pain/injury comes for us all, some crumble, some solidify, choose the latter

Thursdays, weighted vest and playing around

09/10/2025

A simple set up to get more out of your core exercises, by starting in this position you’ll already be engaging more than you normally would and from there you can learn create stability while also creating space, movement and control

It’s simple but very effective
