These phrases matter more than people realise.
When you have ADHD, your nervous system reacts faster and stronger to stress. That means words said in heated moments can either calm the brain or set it on fire.
The phrases in this image do one important thing.
They slow everything down.
Saying things like
“I need a moment to process this”
“Let’s take a step back”
“I understand how you feel”
“I’m listening”
is not weakness. It is emotional regulation in action.
Many people with ADHD were never taught how to pause before reacting. They learned to mask, people-please, or explode and then feel ashamed afterwards.
These phrases create a pause between feeling and reacting. That pause is where control lives.
If you struggle with emotional overwhelm, conflict, or saying things you regret when you’re stressed, this isn’t a character flaw.
It’s often ADHD.
And skills like this can be learned.
