HELLO! It’s been a while since I introduced myself! For those who haven’t met me yet, I’m Sammi and I am a counsellor for children and adults. I provide support on parenting, child development and child mental well-being.

Today I want to share a few of my proudest moments since I started this practice.
1. Made a real difference to multiple people and families
2. Expanded to include more counsellors to help you when you need it the most

Tackling loneliness is a campaign close to my heart. As we get older or significant changes happen in our lives, it is easy to lose touch with friends and family. Before we know it, we’ve isolated ourselves. Know that you’re not alone. When children are misbehaving, it is often a sign that they are not coping with whatever is going on at the moment. When a child is sent on a 'time-out', it doesn't help them process their feelings or the situation.

What a child needs is a 'time-in' with you; when any of us are overwhelmed by our emotions, we seek comfort and attention, your children are no different.

Strong and resilient adults starts in childhood. Children need to know the experience of being respected so they can learn to respect themselves, others and the world. Children must feel worthy of respect, and it ultimately starts with parents (I use the term parents to mean biological, adoptive, foster, guardian and anyone else who is responsible for a child)

Default response happens = do the opposite action instead.

Your child's behaviours may trigger uncomfortable responses so you're very quick to shut that behaviour down. This teaches children that some emotions are not okay to have, and they learn to suppress them. By going against your default responses, you can help provide your children with a safe space to explore their emotions.

What I wish I knew before training in mental health:
1. Mental health is very difficult to quantify and qualify. No one person's experiences are the same
2. How important it is to engage in self-care as a therapist
3. How often parents blame their child for the family's issues. No one is at blame. There is no right or wrong. Things just are.
4. How the work can actually effect your own mental health
5. How important it is to continue with personal therapy so you can be the best therapist for your clients
