Antibiotics do not work for problems such as colds and flu, which are caused by viruses.

Using antibiotics when they're not needed encourages harmful bacteria that live inside you to become resistant – also known as antimicrobial resistance. That means that antibiotics may not work when you really need them. Three steps we can all take to help prevent Antimicrobial Resistance:

β€’ Protect yourself from infections, e.g. by getting vaccinated when eligible
β€’ Only take antibiotics and other antimicrobials when prescribed
β€’ Never share or use leftover antibiotics.

We're preparing for five days of resident doctor strikes starting this Friday..... are you?
Here are a few things you can do to help:

πŸ’Š Order repeat prescriptions in plenty of time so you don't run out
πŸ‘€ A&E will be super busy, so get familiar with other health services near to home and add NHS111 to your phone
🩹 Keep a first aid kit and well-stocked medicine cabinet at home, including painkillers, indigestion remedies and diarrhoea tablets
🀒 Avoid hospital if you're experiencing symptoms of Norovirus (D&V) or have cold or flu-like symptoms
🚨 Use the NHS Emergency Prescription Service if a regular medication runs out completely (available through NHS111)
🧳 If you’re visiting us from another part of the country and you need a GP appointment for routine treatment, please call your own surgery. If you just need a prescription, they can send it to any pharmacy you choose.

Resident doctors (formerly known as junior doctors) are due to begin five days of continuous strike action at 7am this Friday 25 July, ending at 7am on Wednesday 30 July.

We have plans in place to maintain patient safety and to prioritise essential services during the strike period, including cancer and emergency care. With hundreds of doctors likely to take part in industrial action, however, this does mean we have regrettably had to cancel some outpatient clinics, non-urgent work and routine surgical procedures across our hospitals.

If we contact you to reschedule your appointment, please accept our apologies. If you do not hear from us and your appointment is due to take place over the strike period, please attend as planned as we will try to keep as many routine services running as we can.

Bugs are still doing the rounds!

If you're visiting a loved one in hospital, please wash your hands regularly, particularly as you enter and leave the building.

If handwashing facilities aren't available, please use the supplies of hand sanitiser which are freely available throughout our hospitals.

Resident doctors (formerly known as junior doctors) will shortly be taking strike action for five days, starting from 7am on Friday 25 July running until Wednesday 30 July at 6.59am.

Due to attend the hospital? Please continue as planned if you haven’t heard from us. If we need to cancel and reschedule your appointment, we'll be in touch ASAP to let you know, and if this is the case, please accept our apologies in advance.

Emergency care departments will remain open for the most serious illness and injuries, but long waits are expected. Please use alternatives such as local urgent treatment centres, NHS 111 or your local GP or pharmacy service wherever you can.

Have you heard about the new way to manage your appointments on your smartphone, tablet or computer?
It’s important to us that you have a quick and easy way to make, reschedule and cancel your appointments, putting you in control of your care.
You don’t even need to register for the service – if you have supplied us with a mobile phone number when you have come to hospital previously, we have all we need to get you up and running.
And, if you’d rather not use the service, that’s not an issue. You can still manage your appointments as you always have.

🀰 Did you know? The whooping cough vaccine has been given in pregnancy in the UK since 2012. A study of 20,000 vaccinated women found no risks to pregnancy or unborn babies. Vaccination is the best way to protect your child! πŸ’ͺ
😷 Whooping cough is a serious infection causing long bouts of coughing and choking. It can lead to pneumonia and brain damage, especially in young babies. Most babies with whooping cough need hospital treatment. Let's keep them safe! πŸ₯
Public health midwife Joanna Melia says whooping cough is on the rise. Vaccination rates in Humber and North Yorkshire were the best in England last year, but we need to keep it up! πŸ’‰
🀱 Joanna says: "Vaccination in pregnancy passes immunity to your baby and protects them until they receive their own vaccination at eight weeks old." Lower your own risk of infection and protect your child! πŸ’‰ 11 12
πŸ“… When to get vaccinated: Around the time of your mid-pregnancy scan (usually at 20 weeks), but you can have it from 16 weeks. Get vaccinated before 32 weeks for the best protection. Ask your midwife about booking an appointment! πŸ—“οΈ

Group Chief People Officer, Simon Nearney recently paid a visit to Claire Ramsey, Senior Occupational Therapy Assistant on Ward 4 at HRI, to congratulate her for receiving a Shining Light nomination.

The nomination said: "Claire came up to see us on the 13th floor for some OT advice about one of her patients who has been in hospital for a long time. She she worried her mood was dipping and becoming institutionalised. Claire completed an Interest Checklist with the patient, and identified a large number of activities and interests she can engage her patient in. Claire has actively sought out whether we're completing any activity groups upstairs, and asked whether her patient can come and join in. They have also been for a walk around the grounds, as she loves gardening and the outdoors. Based on Claire's work, we've managed to get the patient some puzzle books, bulbs to plant and baking to complete. I wanted to highly commend Claire on her holistic and patient-centred care. She has gone out of her way to make sure she can provide a high standard of holistic care to her patient, and she has really understood and embraced the occupational therapy role. She is an asset to the OT team down on the 4th floor."

Our Shining Lights staff recognition scheme celebrates those gems who go the extra mile to make a difference – whether it was a thoughtful gesture to put someone at ease, or a kind act – we want to hear about it!

Both patients and staff can nominate.

Have you nominated a Shining Light yet? Do it now, it's an online form and only takes a few minutes: https://buff.ly/wnLPTLy

Suffering with diarrhoea and vomiting?

These symptoms can usually be managed at home - please don't come to A&E or visit our hospitals if you're affected as it risks spreading infection to others.

Seek advice from your local pharmacy or NHS 111.

Congratulations to Lilli Hales on her graduation from the University of Hull today. Having recently been diagnosed with leukaemia, she was sadly too ill to attend her ceremony in person, but with teamwork, anything is possible... Cue our fantastic staff from the Teenage Cancer Trust TYA unit, Ward 33, our catering service, communications team and beyond to ensure Lilli could still celebrate in style at Castle Hill Hospital, surrounded by those she loves. We wish her all the very best for the future.
