When recommending Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) for post-operative care, it’s important your patients are in the hands of therapists who truly understand the complexity of early recovery.

Just as BAAPS membership reflects your dedication to excellence and professional standards, MLD UK registration does the same for lymphatic therapists.

💎 Why this matters:
MLD UK registered therapists:
✔️ Complete comprehensive, accredited training in lymphatic anatomy and post-surgical management
✔️ Follow a professional code of practice
✔️ Have the clinical experience to safely support patients in those delicate early days post-surgery

While many short “lymphatic drainage” courses exist, they often don’t cover the depth of knowledge or hands-on experience needed for safe, effective post-op care.

Encouraging your patients to find a therapist via the MLD UK Register (www.mlduk.org.uk) helps ensure their recovery is supported by practitioners who share your commitment to safe, evidence-based care.

The clinic will be closed from Saturday 25th October and will reopen on Friday 31st October while I take a little break for some much-needed family time (and a quick trip to the big smoke! 💨 🚇).

It’s only 6 days… and let’s be honest, I’ll probably still end up replying to a few of your messages anyway! 😅

I’ll be back soon, recharged and ready to look after you all again.

Breast cancer doesn’t just affect women. I’ve seen my fair share of men dealing with the long term effects of breast cancer treatment. Being male doesn’t make their recovery any easier. Men still get cording, they still get scar tissue tightness, they still get lymphoedema. During my radiotherapy sessions, I’ve seen men walk through the same doors, *always* the only man in the room. It’s isolating and lonely, so let’s not make it lonelier with our language or assumptions.

Possible symptoms of breast cancer in men:
👕 A lump or swelling in the chest area (usually painless)
👕 Changes to the skin over the chest - dimpling, puckering or redness
👕 Nipple changes - inversion, discharge (sometimes bloody), or sores
👕 Swelling in the armpit area
👕 Pain or tenderness in the chest

If you notice something unusual, don’t ignore it! Early detection matters, no matter your gender.

Radiotherapy for Breast Cancer: My Top Tips

Around 70% of people with breast cancer will go on to have radiotherapy. If you’re about to start treatment, here are some of my top tips to help you get through it.

💧 Tip 1: Moisturise
Start moisturising the area that will receive radiotherapy three times a day, beginning a few weeks before treatment and continuing until about six weeks after you finish. Use a moisturiser your skin is already familiar with - this reduces the risk of irritation.

🌿 Tip 2: Deodorant
If you can, switch to a roll-on, aluminium-free deodorant. Spray deodorants tend to have a “fall-out zone,” meaning they can easily reach the radiotherapy area, while roll-ons give you more control. Since aluminium can make your skin more sensitive to treatment, it’s best to avoid it. If you’re unsure, it’s perfectly fine to skip deodorant on the days you have radiotherapy.

🧘‍♀️ Tip 3: Keep That Shoulder Moving
Do the exercises recommended by your physiotherapist, either those given specifically for radiotherapy or the ones from your surgery recovery.
Radiotherapy can cause tightness, especially around the shoulder joint, so regular stretching is key. Try to keep up your exercises for about three months after finishing treatment.

😴 Tip 4: Rest (No, Really!)
“Radiotherapy fatigue” is very real. It might not hit as hard as chemotherapy fatigue, but for some people, it can still be quite draining. Because radiotherapy often marks the end of “active” treatment, when you’re attending hospital regularly, it can be tempting to jump straight back into work and normal life. Give yourself permission to rest and recover. Take a few weeks to recharge, reflect on everything you’ve been through, and ease back into your routine gently.

✨ How I found my way into physiotherapy (and eventually breast cancer physio!) ✨

Growing up in North Wales, I was never far from a hockey stick, tennis racquet or netball court (I always maintain that I was forced into netball, but maybe I secretly enjoyed it 😏). Sport was high up on my priorities, and when a careers questionnaire at 16 told me physiotherapy was a “perfect fit,” it planted a seed I couldn’t ignore.

That seed took me to the University of Salford (yes, a true red brick uni – my mum loved to remind me 😂). From there I made my way around Manchester hospitals on placement, learning the ropes across all areas of physio.

Graduating in 2008 (when there were no jobs going), I started out as a physio and OT assistant before landing my first Band 5 role at East Cheshire NHS Trust. Those early years were full of variety: wards, respiratory (sputum was NOT my bag 🙈), neuro, orthopaedics, outpatients… and eventually, I found my love in MSK, helping people recover from injuries and surgery.

Then one day, I saw my first patient following breast cancer surgery. Something just clicked. What started almost by chance became my calling, and 12 years later, I can’t imagine doing anything else. Supporting people through breast cancer recovery is more than a job to me, it’s where my passion is.

Thanks for following along my journey - swipe through to see a little more of the story ➡️

✨ Why pay for the Breast Cancer Recovery Course? ✨

Here’s the truth…

Reliable & Specialist Knowledge

This course is created by a breast cancer physiotherapist and lymphoedema specialist (that’s me!). Instead of scrolling through Google or piecing together conflicting advice, you’ll know you’re learning evidence-based, safe, and practical advice designed specifically for breast cancer recovery.

Incredible Value

A 1-hour appointment with me is £95. To cover the same breadth of information that’s inside this course, you’d need around 5+ hours of 1:1 time, which would cost around £475. The course gives you all that, for a fraction of the price.

Access Anytime, Anywhere

Recovery doesn’t follow a strict schedule. With the course, you can go back to the lessons whenever you need them, no waiting lists, no rushing through appointments, no forgetting what was said in clinic.

Pace That Works For YOU

Whether you want to take it step by step or binge-watch in a weekend, you’re in control. You can pause, rewind, and revisit the content as many times as you like.

Confidence & Peace of Mind

Breast cancer recovery can feel overwhelming. This course is designed to reduce that anxiety, giving you clear, safe guidance to support your healing and help you feel confident in your body again.

A Supportive Investment in YOU

Think of it as giving yourself access to expert knowledge that’s usually locked inside a clinic.
