✨ 3 Early Signs You Might Benefit from Physiotherapy After Breast Cancer ✨

After breast cancer treatment, it’s normal to experience changes in your body, but that doesn’t mean you have to “just live with it.” Physiotherapy can play a big role in recovery and quality of life.

Here are 3 common signs that physio could help you:

1️⃣ Limited shoulder movement – struggling to reach overhead, dress, or fasten a bra.
2️⃣ Persistent pain or tightness – especially around the chest, armpit, or shoulder blade.
3️⃣ Heaviness or swelling in the arm/hand – possible signs of lymphoedema.

The earlier these are addressed, the better the outcomes. Gentle exercises, manual therapy, and tailored guidance can make a big difference.

👉 Have you noticed any of these signs, or do you know someone who has? Share in the comments or tag a friend who might find this helpful.

… aka How to Stop Making Scars Worse!

1. Exposing Scars to the Sun Too Soon

Why it’s a mistake: UV rays can darken healing tissue, making scars more visible or permanent.
Tip: Always use SPF 30+ on healing skin or cover with clothing.

2. Picking or Scratching at the Scab
Why it’s a mistake: This disrupts natural healing and increases the risk of infection or deeper scarring.
Tip: Keep it moisturised and let the scab fall off naturally.

3. Not Moisturising Enough (or Using the Wrong Products)
Why it’s a mistake: Dry skin heals poorly, and harsh or scented products can cause irritation.
Tip: Use fragrance-free, scar-friendly moisturisers like silicone gels or medical-grade ointments.

4. Ignoring the Importance of Massage
Why it’s a mistake: Scar tissue can become tight or raised without proper stimulation.
Tip: Once the wound is closed, gentle massage can improve texture and reduce thickness.

5. Thinking “It’s Too Late to Treat”
Why it’s a mistake: Many believe if they missed the first few weeks, nothing can help.
Tip: Scars continue remodeling for up to 1 year—or more. There are always options, like MCA dry tattooing and silicone sheets.

Silicone sheets are commonly used to improve the appearance of scars, especially raised scars like hypertrophic scars and keloids.

How do they work?

1. Hydration & Moisture Balance
Silicone creates an occlusive barrier over the skin, trapping moisture in.

2. Protection
Acts as a physical barrier that protects the scar from bacteria, friction, and other irritants, reducing inflammation and further injury.

3. Pressure & Oxygen Regulation
Silicone sheets may apply gentle pressure to the scar, which helps to limit blood supply (important in scar overgrowth) and creating an optimal environment for healing.

You can start using silicone sheets as soon as your scabs have gone. It’s recommended to use them for 12 hours a day, and there is evidence to suggest they’re best used for 3 months or more!

May is Melanoma Awareness Month, and I’m sure we’re all enjoying the sunshine that we’ve been getting these past few weeks ☀️

As a physiotherapist specialising in scars, cording and lymphoedema, I see first-hand how melanoma doesn’t just impact the skin - it can affect the entire lymphatic system, especially after surgery or treatment. Early detection saves lives, and scar and lymphatic care improves recovery.

🧴 Don’t forget:
✔️ Wear a high factor SPF
✔️ Get regular skin checks (regular skin checks are important, especially if you have many moles, fair skin, a history of sunburns, or a family history of melanoma)
✔️ Know your skin and report any changes to your GP

Julie’s Story.

“I developed severe lymphoedema in my
arm, following treatment for breast cancer; I felt despondent as I could not wear any of my nice clothes, and I cried when I saw the extreme swelling of my arm
in mirrors when I was in changing rooms. Annabel was recommended to me as she is a highly trained and experienced physiotherapist, with specialist training in
lymphoedema and in helping cancer patients with post surgical/radiotherapy/chemotherapy complications.

Initially, Annabel treated the severe cording which developed in my arm pit, following axillary node
clearance, with intensive physiotherapy which has improved my arm movement enormously. She also eradicated the stiffness in my shoulder with stretching and massage techniques. I see Annabel regularly for lymphatic drainage and massage on my arm, in conjunction with treatment using the Lymphatouch machine. I have been thrilled and amazed at the reduction of swelling from lymphoedema in my arm which has been very significant. Annabel also regularly applies Kinesiotape at the top of my arm, where the compression sleeve rim ends, to further reduce swelling. I can now wear most of my jackets and clothes and I no longer feel repulsed and upset when I see my arm in the mirror.

Annabel is a genuinely lovely person, is very empathetic and makes you feel totally
relaxed. I look forward to going to the sessions as she makes them so pleasant and, importantly, my arm always looks much slimmer when I leave. I cannot thank Annabel enough for improving my quality of life, beyond recognition, and for giving me hope.”

Thanks to Julie for sharing this wonderful review and story of her Lymphoedema journey.

🪷 Lymphoedema Awareness Week 🪷

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that affects millions worldwide, yet it remains widely misunderstood. This week, we’re raising awareness, breaking the stigma, and supporting those living with lymphoedema.

What is Lymphoedema?

It’s a condition that causes swelling due to a build-up of lymph fluid, often in the arms or legs. It can be caused by cancer treatments, infections, or genetic factors—but with the right care, it can be managed.

A lymphoedema therapist plays a key role in managing the condition. They can provide specialist treatments such as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), compression therapy, exercise programmes and skin care advice to help reduce swelling and improve quality of life. Early intervention and ongoing support can make a huge difference ☺️

An amazing before and after for a patient who has been coming to see me for c section scar therapy. My patient was really unhappy with her c section ‘shelf’ and wanted help to improve the appearance of her scar.

Before photo taken 6 months post partum.
After photo taken 13 months post partum.

Scar therapy is a marathon, not a sprint! Although changes such as scar colour, sensitivity and pain reduction can happen quickly, it’s taken months to get to this point.

As well as scar therapy, this lovely lady also worked hard on her exercise routine, strengthening her abdominals with Pilates and a diet change, which has further enhanced the dramatic changes seen in the photos!

Put any questions you have for me in the comments ☺️
