Gut cleansing can be a popular term that’s used to describe a range of approaches to help with gut health. This may involve certain supplements to support the gut microbiome by killing off certain bacteria.

Often it’s used when someone is experiencing digestive symptoms such as bloating or diarrhoea, but it can also be used in situations where symptoms may stem back to issues in the gut.

For example, it might be considered that a gut clean may help address the cause of skin issues.

While gut cleansing may be helpful for some, approaching the gut and the microbiome from a science-based perspective is crucial.

This week's blog covers this topic in more detail.

SIBO is a leading cause of IBS symptoms with some research indicating that up to 80% of those with IBS actually have SIBO and the underlying issue.

A misunderstanding which surrounds SIBO is that it needs to be treated as if it were an infection. This can lead SIBO patients down the path of repeated antibiotics or herbal antimicrobials.

While there is certainly a role for these approaches, other aspects of the gut often need to be taken into consideration. This is especially true if there hasn't been an improvement with antibiotic therapy.

This week's blog covers this topic in more detail.

Learn 7 natural ways to manage SIBO effectively, from dietary tips to lifestyle changes. Expert insights from The IBS & Gut Health Clinic for better gut health.

This specific change can lead to adjustments in short-term symptom management and treatment approaches that address the underlying issues.

For many, these underlying issues may include:

- Methane SIBO (IMO)
- Dysbiosis
- Dehydration or electrolyte imbalances
- Inappropriate levels of fibre
- Inactivity
- Do you suffer from IBS with constipation?

🔗The connection between the gut and the brain is something we hear more and more about. It’s common for sufferers of IBS to experience a flare during increased stress and anxiety. With the first step, trying to focus on relaxation and eating in a slow and calm way, another option is to dive deeper into gut-directed hypnotherapy. This can be helpful alongside nutritional support and there are other lifestyle tools such as relaxation, breathing techniques, meditation and time in nature that can also support a parasympathetic (rest and digest) state to support health.

📝This study highlighted the positive benefits of gut-directed hypnotherapy in participants, with improvements in IBS symptoms comparable to a low FODMAP diet. They measured both gastrointestinal symptoms throughout the 6-week study and changes in psychological measures, and how these effects continued beyond the study for the next 6 months.

🔑A key finding was that gut-directed hypnotherapy was superior in efficacy to dietary change in participants based on psychological indices. So if stress and anxiety are driving worsening symptoms, it might be a great option to explore to support your IBS and help to manage symptoms. Supporting your overall gut health starts with addressing imbalances in the microbiome and supporting digestion, which can be supportive alongside any stress management tool, therapy, hypnotherapy and rest that works for you.

🧑‍⚕️We consider symptoms holistically and include lifestyle medicine alongside nutritional steps to build a more resilient gut microbiome and help you move towards health.

👉🏼Check out our simple swaps for pancakes that are low FODMAP and gut-friendly. If you tolerate wheat, eggs, and honey, then you can enjoy the classic pancakes, but what about those who struggle to tolerate certain FODMAPs, have an egg allergy or intolerance or want to make pancakes a little healthier, then see the suggestions and have fun finding delicious options to suit you.

✅Try spelt flour in place of wheat flour
✅Use flax egg in place of egg
✅Try gluten-free plain flour or buckwheat flour if gluten intolerant or coeliac
✅Boost fibre by using wholegrain spelt flour and try adding ground flaxseeds to the mix
✅Switch to lower FODMAP fruits such as strawberries or less ripe banana
✅Try maple syrup in place of honey
✅Mash banana and add cinnamon to pancake mixture for extra plant points - natural sweetness and extra fibre. Use not-too ripe bananas if following a low FODMAP diet or omit them completely.
✅Try small amounts of blueberries on top

👉Feeling nauseous and sick can be one of the most under-discussed aspects of gut conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The truth is that digestive issues are varied. Even if you have been diagnosed with a condition, you may only be experiencing a small amount of the common symptoms. Nausea in IBS is, however, quite common.

📃This means that there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ approach to treatment for IBS-related nausea. It’s about working to discover what that diagnosis means for you and your gut health and how to get things back on track. By addressing this underlying issue it’s possible to manage IBS symptoms with the ultimate aim to treat IBS so symptoms fully resolve. While the range of digestive symptoms can vary dramatically, these can offer clues as to what’s contributing to your condition. Along with the bloating, altered bowel patterns (constipation or diarrhoea), gas and pain, the feeling of sickness or nausea is a very common aspect of digestive imbalances and disorders such as IBS.

🤢Nausea, however, may not always be something we think about when talking about IBS but it commonly comes along with these other symptoms. Not only is it a very unpleasant feeling, it can take a lot of the joy out of eating and socialising. It can also affect your appetite.

😱Our emotional state also impacts these sensations. It’s not uncommon to feel nauseous when under a great deal of stress, even in those without digestive issues. A job interview or a first date are perhaps 2 situations where this is most familiar. Digestive issues can also make us feel more anxious and more sensitive to stress. This is what we can call a ‘top-down’ communication. 🧠A message sent from the brain (top) to the gut (down) leading to the sensation in the gut. This communication takes place via the gut-brain axis.
