We recently welcomed 'The Crox Duo' to Hazelmere for the first time. They are a musical duo made up of husband and wife team Sarah and Martin, who play light classical arrangements on a wide variety of musical instruments.

Sarah and Martin engaged really well with our residents, providing them with a lovely programme introducing each piece and explaining about each instrument. Everyone really enjoyed listening to familiar renditions, which they clapped and tapped along to.

We have already booked their next visit in as part of our Christmas timetable, when they will be performing some festive themed pieces for us.

We combined 'Chocolate Cupcake Day' with a Hazelmere darts competition this week.
It took a while to get used to the plastic/velcro options, rather the familiar metal points, but once we'd mastered them, we were off!
It was cake and tea rather than pie and pints, but still a successful and enjoyable afternoon.
Move over Luke Littler! ☺️

Struggling with low mood as the days get shorter?

It could be Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

SAD is a type of depression linked to seasonal changes, often starting in autumn and lasting through winter.

Here are some tips to help navigate SAD:
πŸ’™ Get outside - natural light can boost your mood.
πŸ’™ Let in the light - open blinds and sit near windows.
πŸ’™ Feed your body - eat a balanced diet with plenty of nutrients.
πŸ’™ Get moving - exercise helps release feel-good chemicals.
πŸ’™ Keep a diary - track your feelings and triggers.
πŸ’™ Help your future self - plan enjoyable activities to look forward to.

If you’re feeling very low or struggling to cope, speak to a healthcare professional. You’re not alone, support is available.

Our monthly visit from the trainers at Community Sports Trust who this time brought us a couple of activities to encourage hand/eye coordination and accuracy.
It took us all back to our days visiting fairgrounds, though on this occasion there were no goldfish or cuddly toys to be won ☺️🐟

Last week we saw the return of the lovely Tom O Neill to Hazelmere and he didn't disappoint. This time he brought his Elvis costume and selection of Elvis hits to entertain our residents.
There was lots of singing along, foot tapping and even some dancing, which resulted in a great afternoon of entertainment.

1 in 6 breast cancers don’t present as a lump. Knowing the other warning signs could save a life - Here’s what to look for:

βœ… Skin changes – puckering, dimpling, rash or a texture like orange peel
βœ… New ni**le inversion – if your ni**le suddenly pulls inwards and that’s not your usual
βœ… Discharge or bleeding from the ni**le
βœ… Changes in shape or size – breasts aren’t identical, but look for new asymmetry
βœ… Persistent pain or tenderness

πŸ’–Check monthly by looking and feeling each breast. There’s no β€œright” technique - what matters is noticing what’s normal for you so you can spot changes early.

πŸŽ—οΈ It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month so please SHARE this post to help someone else recognise the signs. Early detection saves lives!

We had a fantastic visit from Owl Adventures recently, during which we were lucky enough to be able to meet face to face with 3 different breeds of owls, and a beautiful hawk.

Robyn taught us all about their breeds, diet and characteristics and we were all captivated by the beauty and grace of these fabulous birds.

Owl Adventures are always really well received by our residents, and we are already looking forward to their next visit.

You might be surprised to hear that the hardest part of my job isn’t just treating the cancer itself, but helping patients manage everything else that comes with it - the fatigue, sleep issues, emotional strain, toll on relationships.

In fact, 1 in 3 people with cancer experience anxiety or depression. And the truth is, it’s probably more than that.

My PhD research focuses on improving quality of life for people living with cancer, because true cancer care means caring for both body and mind.

So whether you’re going through cancer or supporting someone who is, I hope this video encourages you to take a moment to check in with yourself, emotionally as well as physically. Looking after your mental health is part of cancer care too. πŸ’™

Meet Jody, she recently took Bupa’s Medication Check and it helped her take control of her health.

With a family history of breast cancer, she’s been under regular care of her doctor and has previously been recommended Tamoxifen as a preventative drug. But knowing the potential side effects, she hesitated.

After taking Bupa’s Medication Check, it revealed that Tamoxifen wouldn’t be effective for her, a powerful insight that now allows her to explore better options.

Personalised testing that can make a difference.

🐠🐎Yesterday we had a visit from Anna and Lydia from Inspiring Animal Therapy. Our residents had been looking forward to this visit and we had a full room, plus extras, waiting patiently for them! Anna and Lydia introduced the animals to everyone, answered many questions and gave everyone a chance to interact. We were also able to take the animals into the rooms of some of our residents who weren't feeling up to a trip to the lounge. The main feedback from the residents was "When can they come back?"

Wilf, an ex pilot, couldn't make our first trip, so we rearranged another so that he could visit his old stomping ground.
He loved seeing the changes to Manchester Airport since his time there, and had plenty of stories to tell us about his time in the air.

One of our lovely residents celebrated her 89th birthday recently at Hazelmere House. Margaret was given the "Hazelmere Birthday Treatment" and presented with a birthday cake and card during activities, with all of her friends present. They all sang Happy Birthday to her, and then Margaret shared her beautiful birthday cake (freshly baked in our kitchen) with everyone at afternoon tea!
