Well, the summer holidays are here again 😅

I do love being able to spend a bit more time with my boys and having a break from the craziness of all the clubs and sports.

But, it's also pretty hard to juggle childcare and work, keep everyone happy and entertained, plan some fun activities, and hold it all together...

It's a lot!! Can anyone else relate?

I'm sending solidarity, from me to you. Let's do this, ladies!! 💪

Who am I, and what do I do?

>> I'm trying to remember to introduce myself every now and again on here, to welcome my new followers (hi! 🤗) and to remind everyone else what I do!

I'm Babs, a Specialist Pelvic Health Physiotherapist.

🧡 I specialise in pelvic floor care: educating women, spreading the word about good pelvic floor care, assessing, diagnosing and treating women with pelvic floor issues, and generally being a passionate advocate for women's health!

👩‍⚕️I worked in the NHS for many years before opening my own clinic (I love the NHS, it is a wonderful institution, but it obviously has challenges with funding and resources, and I wanted to be able to give women the time and attention they deserve).

📍My clinic is in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. It's a gorgeous, cosy space with a treatment area and even a gym (I support a lot of sportswomen and athletes).

👩‍👦‍👦👨‍👦I have an amazing, supportive husband, and 3 young boys - they definitely keep me on my toes 😅

Thanks for following! 🤗

My youngest boy came back from with this amazing poster last week 🥰

I had a good laugh with him about the picture he drew - it is not particularly flattering - looks like I am hammering the fake tan 😂

Also - apparently my superpower is “working”...

I wasn’t sure if this was a good thing or a bad thing 🤷‍♀️

I talk a lot to the boys about how much I love my job, and they have come to understand what I do for a living. They are pretty blasé about the fact that I examine ladies' ge****ls all day long.

I do hope they think I am a ‘present’ mum - although this poster has made me question it with my ‘superpower’ 🤦‍♀️

There is so much pressure on us women these days. Society tells us we need to have successful careers, be amazing and present mums, look our best all the time, look after our health, have tidy and clean homes - it’s a bit much at times 🤯

If you are overwhelmed with it, I feel it, too ❤️

If you lift weights or want to get back to lifting, but you're worried about the impacts on your pelvic floor...

I get it, I really do. I see so many women in clinic with exactly the same concerns.

In fact - I was this exact place myself - so I truly get it!

I am here to help you get back to doing the thing you love! 🏋️‍♀️

Have you seen someone before for pelvic floor issues, with disappointing results?

Please don't give up hope - it does NOT mean that there is no hope for improving your symptoms 🧡

I see this sometimes in clinic...

A patient has previously seen another HCP for support with their pelvic floor, but they don't feel like they really saw the results they were hoping for.

Sometimes they will find that second time around they do get results!

I am not saying here that I’m the only physio in the world that can help women by the way 😊

There can be different reasons as to why treatment can work on some occasions and not on other occasions…

➡️ Sometimes you just don't click with a physio or HCP, so you don't feel safe and supported
➡️ You were busy and overwhelmed the first time around, and didn't have enough time and energy for your treatment
➡️ You might be in a different place physically now; more energy, sleeping better, fitter

Don't continue to suffer - give it another go, you might be surprised at the results 🎯

Am I saying here that everyone I see gets better? No I am definitely not saying this. Physio works for a lot of women with pelvic floor issues but some may need further intervention.

Physio should be is the first port of call for pelvic floor concerns ☎️

How is July going so quickly already?!! 😅

It will be the summer holidays before we know it!

I'll be taking some time away from clinic to have a little break and spend time with my boys 🤗

Female Focus will be closed from Monday 28th July to Monday 4th August (reopening on Tuesday 5th Aug).

(I'll also take a bit of time off towards the end of the holidays, too, I'll post an update on those dates soon 👀)

What should people look out for when choosing a pelvic floor specialist?

Here are my 4 top tips on what to look for to find the right Specialist Pelvic Physiotherapist for you... (I started this with 3, but I had another one I just HAD to share with you, so it turned into 4! 😆)

1️⃣ See a specialist, not a generalist

>> This might sound obvious, but make sure the physio has skills in pelvic examination and treatment. An internal assessment is sooo insightful if you have pelvic floor problems - how else do you know what’s happening down there if it’s not assessed? 🤔

2️⃣ Look for experience

>> Choose someone who has been working in the specialism for a long time. Experience brings knowledge, and knowledge brings better care and treatment. I have been working in the specialism for 15 years and have treated hundreds of women. It’s a complex area, and you need to be sure your physio is highly skilled to allow you to get the best treatment 🌟

3️⃣ It is important that you chose a physio that continually learns, practices CPD and acknowledges that they don’t know it all!!

>> I can’t emphasize this point enough. The best physios out there are ones who acknowledge that we don’t have all the answers for everything (yet!) and we MUST continue to ask questions, learn and be aware of new research coming out all the time.

4️⃣ Think about your end goal

>> What is your end goal? How important is this goal? Think through this before your appointment and talk to your physio about it at your first session. For example, are you aiming to run a marathon without bladder leakage? Or do you want to be able to go out for the day without panicking about where the nearest toilet is? Make sure you tell your physio about your goals, so she can tailor your treatment accordingly 🎯

"Babs - your va**na examinations are famous around here!”

I had a patient in clinic last week who said this to me.

She continued… "So many of the mums that I speak to around here have either seen you or are booked in to see you. You must see all the va**nas in Wilmslow”.

We had a good laugh about this 😂

I REALLY love my job. I meet so many lovely ladies, and I love helping them.

I strongly feel that women need more support; they need to be listened to, they need a thorough assessment, and they need guidance.

I am here if you need me 🥰

When women are informed, can ask questions, and really understand what's going on with their body, they often feel sooo much better.

Fear of the unknown is a big thing I see day in day out! Understanding what’s going on is often key to reducing symptoms too!

Knowledge is power! 💪

What is this strange looking thing?! 😆

It's a type of pessary.

✅ Pessaries are prosthetic devices inserted into the va**na for structural purposes
✅ They are most commonly used to treat and manage pelvic organ prolapse
✅ They help maintain the location of organs in the pelvic region

At Female Focus, I measure and fit cubes (like this one) and ring pessaries for pelvic organ prolapse.

Pessaries can be life-changing for women with prolapse.

Wearing one can allow women to feel less symptomatic with heaviness and dragging. They often feel more confident and able to do more exercise without symptoms or fear of the prolapse getting worse.

In some cases, wearing one can even cause the prolapse to reduce or disappear altogether!

They are not the right thing for everyone, though, so you would need an initial assessment with me before we can decide if a pessary is the appropriate treatment for your situation.

If you have any questions, just drop me a message 🧡

I absolutely love my clinic - I try to make it as cosy and inviting as possible 🥰

Not only do I want it to be a place I want to be every day, I also want it to be somewhere my patients like to come.

My clinic is a safe, comfortable space where you will be heard and seen, and can spend time on your health and wellbeing without the distractions of the outside world.

I have a treatment area, a gym area, a gorgeous brick fireplace, and lots of little knick-knacks around. I know you'll love it, too!
