Keeping teams compliant is rarely as simple as booking a course.

For Office Managers, Training Coordinators, and Supervisors, organising training also means:

finding dates that work
reducing downtime
maintaining cover
keeping certificates up to date

That is why Ouch focuses on:
✔ Predictable course schedules
✔ Local Dorset delivery
✔ Simple booking
✔ Low-disruption training built around real teams

Helping busy businesses stay compliant without breaking the rota.

A common question we hear is:
Does standard First Aid at Work training cover paediatric emergencies?

Not fully.

While workplace first aid focuses mainly on adult emergencies, paediatric first aid is specifically designed around infants and young children.

That includes:
✔ Child and infant CPR
✔ Choking response
✔ Allergic reactions
✔ Child-specific emergencies

For childcare and early years settings, appropriate paediatric first aid training is often a legal requirement under EYFS guidance.

At Ouch Learning & Development, we focus on practical, supportive training designed around real working environments and busy teams.

Many childcare and early years roles require appropriate paediatric first aid training to help keep children safe and settings compliant.

One of the biggest misconceptions we see is assuming standard workplace first aid covers infants and young children fully.

In reality, paediatric first aid training is specifically designed around:
✔ Infant and child CPR
✔ Choking response
✔ Emergency care for younger children
✔ Age-specific first aid situations

For busy childcare teams, the challenge is often finding training that is practical to organise around staffing and day-to-day operations.

That is why many Dorset settings prioritise:

Local training
Straightforward booking
Minimal disruption
Real-world learning environments

Not all workplace first aid kits should look the same.

A small office, a busy workshop, and a hospitality venue all face very different risks, which is why HSE guidance recommends basing your first aid provision on your actual workplace environment, not a generic checklist.

A few key reminders for employers:
✔ Review your workplace risks regularly
✔ Make sure your kit matches those risks
✔ Check supplies are in date and fully stocked
✔ Ensure staff know what to do in an emergency

Many businesses only think about first aid after an incident happens. A simple review now can make a huge difference later.

At Ouch Learning & Development, we help Dorset businesses stay compliant with practical, low-disruption first aid training designed around real operational environments.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that there’s a fixed HSE checklist every business must follow but there isn’t.

As highlighted in this post, HSE guidance states that first aid kits should be based on your workplace risk assessment, meaning the contents should reflect the specific risks your team faces.

For most low-risk workplaces, a kit will typically include:
✔ Plasters
✔ Wound dressings
✔ Gloves
✔ Eye pads
✔ Antiseptic wipes
✔ Tape and scissors
✔ A first aid guidance leaflet

But a workshop, warehouse, hospitality venue, and office may all require different levels of provision.

The important thing is making sure your kit is:
• Appropriate for your environment
• Fully stocked and in date
• Easy to access in an emergency
• Supported by properly trained staff

A standard off-the-shelf kit is a starting point, not always the full solution.

At Ouch Learning & Development, we help Dorset businesses build practical, compliant first aid provision with training designed around real operational environments and minimal disruption.

Worried your team might struggle with First Aid training?

You’re not alone it’s one of the biggest concerns we hear from businesses.

But here’s the reality:

First Aid at Work courses are designed to help people succeed, not fail.

From day one, learners are guided step-by-step:
🟢 Practise real-life scenarios
🟢 Build skills gradually
🟢 Get feedback and support
🟢 Learn by doing, not memorising

If someone needs extra help, they get it.

Because in a real emergency, confidence is everything.

That’s why good training doesn’t just tick a box it prepares your team to act when it counts.

Trust me I'm the first aider!

Great to be at the Dorset Chamber Business Expo today at AFC Bournemouth.

Events like this are a good reminder of how valuable local business communities are, not just for networking, but for sharing practical insight, supporting other organisations, and building long-term relationships across Dorset.

It’s been brilliant speaking with local businesses from so many different sectors about the real operational challenges teams face around compliance, training, wellbeing, and workplace safety.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by the Ouch stand for a chat (and a coffee mug 👀).

We’re proud to support Dorset businesses with practical, low-disruption training that works around real working environments, and it’s always great to connect face-to-face with the people behind those businesses.

Can you actually fail a First Aid at Work course?

It’s something a lot of people wonder before booking training 👇

Yes, it is possible.
But here’s what most people don’t realise:

First Aid training isn’t about catching you out.
It’s about making sure you can step in confidently when it matters most.

✔️ No high-pressure exams
✔️ Ongoing support from your trainer
✔️ Practical, hands-on learning
✔️ Time to build confidence as you go

That’s why the vast majority of learners pass, and leave feeling ready, not overwhelmed.

For SMEs, that means your team isn’t just certified… they’re capable.

How long does first aid training really last? ⏳

Officially: 3 years.
In reality? Confidence can drop in as little as 12–18 months.

Skills fade.
Processes change.
And in a real emergency, those seconds matter.

That’s why smart businesses don’t just renew certificates, they keep skills fresh.

A quick refresher today could make all the difference tomorrow.

Is your workplace actually first aid ready? 👀

It’s easy to assume you’re covered… until you look closer.
✔ Do you know when certificates expire?
✔ Has your team trained in the last 12–18 months?
✔ Would they feel confident performing CPR today?

EFAW certificates last 3 years, but confidence and capability can fade much sooner.

If you answered “no” or “not sure” to a couple of these, it might be time for a refresh.

Because in an emergency, hesitation isn’t an option.

At The Waste Group site in Wareham, Dorset, Mo took part in a hands-on session led by Simon.

From fire blankets to extinguishers, he didn’t just learn the theory, he showed what it means to act with confidence inside (and outside) the classroom.

Fire safety isn’t just a tick-box exercise. It’s about real people, in real workplaces, making sure they’re ready to respond when it counts.

Mo’s commitment reflects what we see across the sector: frontline teams who take responsibility seriously and show up for each other.
