Exercise is critical for people living with Parkinson's Disease to maintain optimal health. It has been shown to slow the progression of Parkinson's symptoms as well as improving balance, mobility and cognitive function.
Tailored exercises including balance, resistance and strengthening work can significantly reduce the risk of falls. People with Parkinson's are two to three times likely to fall which can result in major injury or hospital admission.
Physiotherapy intervention can help manage the symptoms of Parkinson's, slow down disease progression as well as helping to maintain mobility and independence.

"I now understand how important regular exercise is for slowing the progression of the condition and managing symptoms. I also hope that my effort will inspire other people living with Parkinson’s to find their own challenge, come forward to tell their own stories about living with Parkinson’s and support the charity."
Bob North, 70, decided to raise money by rowing a half marathon to help the development of better treatments and potentially a cure for Parkinson's after his diagnosis in 2023.
He advises that the key to maintaining the habit of regular exercise is to find something you enjoy doing. He chose rowing as it is a great all-round exercise which he enjoyed in his youth and therefore expresses that it was natural for him to return to the rowing machine as the basis of an exercise regime.
The fundraiser will take place at Hereford Leisure Pool on Saturday, February 8 starting at 9.30am. He also mentions that the satisfaction he gets from achieving his goals is set is a tremendous lift for my mental health and as a direct result of my diagnosis I am leaner, stronger and fitter.
“Since my diagnosis I have learnt of Parkinson’s UK's important work funding research into the condition and supporting people living with Parkinson’s and those who support and care for them.
“I also hope that my effort will inspire other people living with Parkinson’s to find their own challenge, come forward to tell their own stories about living with Parkinson’s and support the charity.”
A huge thank you to Bob, and his dedication and kindness to raising awareness and funds for the Parkinson’s community.
