Are you feeling low ? Have a tomato πŸ…( or any other fruit containing lycopen )

Carotenoid phytonutrients are found predominantly in yellow, orange, and red fruits and vegetables, and a study in the United States measured how much was in the blood of nearly 2,000 people. Higher carotenoid levels among study participants were associated with lower risk of depression symptoms, and the higher the levels, the better they felt.

Lycopene, a specific kind of carotenoid, is the red pigment predominantly found in tomatoes and also present in other fruits, such as watermelon, pink grapefruit, guava, and papaya. A study with a thousand or so older men and women found that those who ate the most tomato products had about half the odds of depression. Why not include tomatoes and other lycopene-rich plant foods in your diet?

Higher consumption of fruits and vegetables in general, as well as folate-rich beans and greens, may lower the risk for depression.

Whether you’re feeling anxious, sad, or angry, have lost interest in activities that once gave you great joy, or just need to talk with someone, never hesitate to seek professional help.

You’re eating lots of veg? Great! Is it organic? Even better! πŸ”ͺ

But hey, life doesn’t get any less complicated these days. What are you chopping your veg on? Because if it’s a plastic chopping board you may, especially as it gets old and worn, be chopping tiny quantities of plastic into your food... oh dear.

Plastics are petrochemicals that mess with our hormones; they are oestrogen mimics, like pesticides. Better get an old-fashioned wooden chopping board. But when you wash it, please dry it thoroughly, so it doesn’t go mouldy... or you can, I’m told, get a quartz chopping board, but that may well be beyond the budget. Wood will do!

What are your favourite exercise ?

What are your favourite exercise ?

The benefits of movement for prevention of dementia are crucial. Some studies show that the area of the brain responsible for storing memories - the hippocampus - can actually grow in response to exercise (1&2*)

Another study of 120 elderly people showed this hippocampul tissue growth in the brain was connected to being able to achieve better memory scores simply from walking for 40 minutes just 3 times a week for a year. The brains of the comparison group shrank over the course of the year. (3*)

How could this happen?

Increased blood flow to the brain is a crucial benefit from moving our body, but exercise also helps neuronal growth and enhances connections between neurone by stimulating an important gene called the BDNF gene (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). (9*)

BDNF stimulates the growth and differentiation of neurone and synapses. It thrives in the areas of the brain that are important for learning and memory.
