Let's talk - Vascular nail tuft/Vascular dermal protrusion (Haems).
This is were there is a small, blood-rich, fleshy growth found directly beneath the nail plate. These structures bleed very easily if cut or damaged and are often hidden under thick or long toenails.
Sometimes they are difficult to see beneath a long nail, it may not be evident until the nippers have already gone through it! Accidental skin cuts can occur. They can be sensitive and are highly susceptible to injury during nail clipping, which can lead to significant bleeding at times.
If bleeding does occur a clean cloth or sterile gauze is applied directly to the area with firm pressure to the nail for a few minutes, it then normally will stop, if the patient is on any blood thinning medication longer pressure may be required and a little dressing to keep the area clean, dry and protected.
Care is always taken with every nail cutting service and aftercare is carried out and advised. Thank you for reading.
