Today, we commemorate auspicious Jayanti of Guruji BKS Iyengar, the most influential YogGuru in modern times who brought about unprecedented refinement, detail and depth to the practice of yogasana and pranayama. He used these 2 limbs in reaching out to all yogangas as defined, described, and detailed by Maharishi Patañjali. Guruji made yoga more accessible to everyone regardless of their physical condition by discovery and inventon of various props. He taught millions of people directly, through his students and his writings including my humble self.
As we pay tribute to Guruji's legacy we must practice with devotion, determination and perseverance. That is true reverence to Guruji.
"There should be devotion in your practice. Then you have to know the meaning of the asana in order to do it effectively with its meaning. Then you have to learn to feel the asana. If you do not know its feel, you oscillate. By feeling, you develop stability and poise. Feel in order to live in it. Convert the asana into a cave for you to pe*****te within to be closer to the soul.
Good asana practice develops in involution the senses, the mind and consciousness. If you are not totally involved, then you become an exhibitionist. Involution is meditation. Meditators say take your senses in. This is what we do while practising or teaching the asana. I hope you understand the meditative value of aum in asana. As you are inter-penetrating while doing the asana, your senses go inwards. That is pratyahara in asana. One should use this pratyahara in the asana as springboard for spiritual growth. One does not practise asana or pranayama for the health of the body throughout sadhana. It may be in the beginning but not later."
~ Guruji BKS Iyengar - Astadala Yogamala Volume-3
Many humble pranams to Guruji. May he keep blessing and guiding us.
