Arc Leisure Matlock is now hosting a new weekly swimming session called Space for Swim, running on Wednesdays from 2pm to 3pm for 10 weeks initially.
These free sessions are designed to offer a calm, supportive swimming environment for anyone with a condition who feels they need more space in the pool.
This initiative has been supported by Derbyshire Dales Council For Voluntary Service (DDCVS) Social Connectedness Project.
The idea for the sessions was inspired by an individual with Parkinson’s who experienced significant physical and mental health benefits from swimming in a more supportive and spacious environment. They first contacted DDCVS via their Social Prescribing service, and their feedback about swimming, in particular, highlighted the need for a regular, inclusive session that could offer similar benefits to others in the community.
They said, "I’m thrilled that Arc Matlock are trialling Space for Swim for ten weeks. We’re all told how important it is to exercise to help with pain but it's not easy to find suitable facilities. Like many other people, health conditions make me vulnerable when exercising. For me, with Parkinson’s and persistent pain, it’s risky if I inhale water, get bumped, or have to move/stop suddenly. I’m slow and vulnerable so I need extra space to swim safely. Everyone’s needs are different but working with a Swim Teacher means we can all look out for each other."
Each session will reserve two lanes and be supported by an experienced Swim Teacher who will offer guidance and help foster a friendly, social atmosphere. There will be the opportunity to meet afterwards in the café for further social time.
