I offer general sports massage as well as Advanced Soft Tissue therapies for injury treatment. We all know we should stretch, but most of us come back from our run/bike ride/workout and quite honestly just feel worn out and hungry so stretching gets missed. However, it’s not a good idea to miss out on a simple stretching routine as it does help prevent injuries. Always stretch after exercise and not before. Warm up with gentle exercise instead.

- working muscles are contracting and shortening to create the force required, stretching helps lengthen the muscles back to their pre exercise length.
- if muscles are constantly shortened they are inefficient and unable to produce power.
- you can also take advantage of warm muscles and gentle increase the length of muscle over time to increase your range of motion.
- increased range of motion means you are less likely to injure yourself when making demands of your body, such as in a race or competion.
- stretching once released increases the blood flow thus aiding recovery.
- stretching helps lower your heart rate and brings a state of relaxation.
- do not stretch cold muscles, you risk injury!
- stretching before a workout or race can hinder performance when you want strong muscles.
- don’t overstretch! Stretching to pain can injure already fragile muscle fibres.
- sports such as running/cycling/functional fitness need muscles capable of their required range of motion, not hyperflexibility!
