In response to increased number of enquiries regarding Meningitis vaccines please see below information:

The MenB vaccine was only introduced into the childhood vaccination schedule in September 2015. If your child was born before 1st May 2015, there is currently no catch-up programme/plan available on the NHS.

Only those deemed at high risk in the hall of residence where confirmed cases have come from in Kent are being vaccinated.

The only circumstances we can offer the MenB vaccine is if a patient has no spleen or if there are changes to the current vaccination programme and a country wide catch-up programme is initiated.

The MenACWY vaccine is available to children currently in years 9 and 10 and is given via the school immunisation service. A catch-up programme is in place for patients under 25 who have not been given this vaccination at school. If your child is still in education, please contact the school immunisation team for vaccination. Catch up post-education up to 25 can be given at the surgery. If you are unsure if your child has had this vaccination, you can find this via the NHS app or contact the surgery for further advice.

Salt plays an important role in the body, but too much can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Many processed foods contain hidden salt, so itโ€™s easy to consume more than recommended. On the other hand, very low salt levels can sometimes contribute to symptoms like muscle cramps, weakness or fluid balance issues, especially if combined with dehydration.

Staying well hydrated, keeping active and aiming for a balanced diet can help support healthy blood pressure. Understanding how salt affects your body can help you make informed choices. ๐Ÿง‚๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿฉบโœจ

๐Ÿ’ฌ Know the signs. Speak up. Be heard.

In healthcare, your concerns matter.

In GP practices, Jessโ€™s Rule encourages clinicians to reflect and review if a patient returns multiple times with the same issue.

In hospitals, Marthaโ€™s Rule gives patients, families and carers the right to ask for an urgent review if they feel something isnโ€™t right.

๐Ÿ‘€ If youโ€™re worried about a loved one in hospital:
- Speak to the ward team
- If concerns remain, you can request a further clinical review

Your voice is important โ€” and it could make a difference.

Symptoms such as ongoing tiredness, swelling, changes in urination or persistent kidney pain should never be ignored. Lifestyle choices, hydration and underlying health conditions all play a role in kidney health.

There is also growing concern about ketamine use in young people, as it can cause serious damage to the bladder and kidneys, sometimes leading to long-term complications. Knowing the risks and acting early can help protect kidney function and overall wellbeing. ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ’™โœจ

Young Carers Action Day shines a light on the incredible young people who help care for family members, often balancing responsibilities at home with school and friendships.

The 2026 theme focuses on Action for Equality, calling for better recognition, improved support in schools, access to training and employment opportunities, and meaningful breaks so young carers can thrive just like their peers.

Some young carers may miss school activities or struggle with their mental health due to caring responsibilities, which is why awareness and understanding matter. Schools, organisations and communities can access resources and posters to help raise awareness and ensure young carers are not held back. ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒŸโœจ

Ovarian Cancer Awareness is a reminder to know the symptoms and act early.

Symptoms can be vague and may include:

- persistent bloating
- tummy pain
- feeling full quickly
- needing to wee more often
- unexplained changes in appetite

If you notice ongoing symptoms that are unusual for you, itโ€™s important to speak to your GP. When discussing symptoms, let your doctor know about any family history of cancer, not just ovarian cancer and not only in parents or siblings, as this can help assess your overall risk.

Keeping up to date with cervical screening when invited is also an important part of protecting your gynaecological health. Early action can make a real difference. ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบโœจ
