The Chinese lunisolar calendar is in 24 parts, based on the suns position in the zodiac chart. So they align their daily rituals to observe and live more closely with nature.

Today, February 4th is the first day of spring. Nature slowly awakens, bulbs are starting to show, birds are singing, days are slowly getting longer… have you noticed the change? The energy is moving now towards Yang energy and getting ready for the Chinese New Year on the 17th.
Spring in Chinese medicine is associated with the liver and Gall Bladder meridians. A time for growth and expansion.

It is still important to be nourishing ourselves, eating good food and prioritising sleep. This Chinese New Year is going to be very powerful, we need to be ready ☯️

A lovely post here this morning from a friend and fellow reflexologist Amanda Johnson Reflexology many of you find it hard to describe that feeling that your sessions give you. This explains it perfectly 🥰

Relaxation during reflexology, particularly Chi Reflexology (where we use the acupoints and the meridians as part of your session) is a topic i love to discuss with clients.
We find ‘that feeling’ hard to describe, and many say it’s like they’ve had a restful sleep, but they’ve been aware of the touch sensation all the time, some say they can’t describe the feeling, but it’s more than a meditative state.

I recently spoke with a fellow reflexologist about this, and I was introduced to the term NSDR - ‘Non Sleep Deep Rest’ and i got to wondering - is that what clients are experiencing?

NSDR is described as “a deeply restorative state between wakefulness and sleep, promoting mental clarity, stress reduction and physical rejuvenation without actually falling asleep, making it a powerful way to reset your nervous system and improve focus and well being”

Here’s a link to more information… see what you think, the science behind the theory is at the bottom of the page 🙏🏻

As well as reading books to be able to chat to my younger clients. I’m also watching Netflix series Strangers Things to chat with my young teens! Pure dedication 😬 I am really enjoying it! Having common ground with nervous or anxious children, is amazing at helping them relax and get more from their sessions.

Ever wondered why you always get ill when you stop ?
It’s because your body’s nervous system is stuck in sympathetic mode. When stressed your body doesn’t want to deal with any issues that your immune system comes up against. So when you finally do stop for a long weekend or a holiday….your body shifts into parasympathetic mode, it finally relaxes and everything you didn’t let your body deal with, comes flooding through.

When stressed, stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol are high, your immune system is shut down to keep you going. So when you rest, relax and slow down, cortisol and adrenalin drop and your immune system plays catch up and you get symptoms as your body starts to detox .
The longer you have stress the harder your body will feel it. When you’re young, your body can cope, however as you get older your body finds it harder to deal with and your body struggles more.

In our ridiculously busy modern world, stress isn’t going to disappear. You need to find ways to reduce that stress, find coping mechanisms that work for you.

💚Prioritise sleep
💚Eat well
💚Exercise
💚Quiet downtime
💚Set boundaries
💚Get support

Stop, thinking you have to earn your rest…I’ll just get through this week…
Make some changes now.

As we step into this new year, I want to invite you into a moment of intention.
This is a time to remember that your life is not meant to be lived on autopilot, nor shaped by the expectations, fears, or momentum of the majority. While the world often moves in loud, fast currents, your soul speaks more quietly—through discernment, alignment, and choice.
This year, may you give yourself permission to pause and ask: Does this truly feel right for me?
Not what is popular.
Not what is familiar.
But what is true.
There is deep spiritual power in choosing your own path, even when it looks different from those around you. When you make decisions rooted in awareness rather than pressure, you reclaim your energy, your clarity, and your direction.
May this year be one where you trust your inner guidance, honor your values, and walk forward with intention—knowing that you are not here to follow the crowd, but to live in alignment with who you truly are.
Wishing you a new year filled with clarity, courage, and conscious choice.
With gratitude,
Sam 👣

Did you know that simple foods can have great benefits for us. This Chinese ginger tea recipe is great for when you have a cold, also it has the benefit of gently warming up your yang energy which is beneficial at this time of year. Best to drink first thing in the morning, avoid drinking ginger tea at night since its yang, warm and has a stimulating nature so it can potentially disrupt your body's natural Yin rhythm for rest.

Ginger is one of the oldest herbs in existence. Its name in Chinese is sheng jiang which means “to defend”. It can ward off the effects of a cold.
Ginger is warming, it supports the lungs, spleen and stomach. It helps digestion, eases nausea and can increase sweating to help colds along.

Red dates are sweet and have a neutral thermic nature, so perfect for nourishing and balancing your energy. They may help with sleep difficulties, they also support the spleen and stomach.

Recipe
500ml water
15g sliced fresh ginger
2 Chinese red dates (optional)
Honey to sweeten if necessary

Add all ingredients apart from the honey to a small pan and bring to the boil.
Once boiling, reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes.
Strain and serve
If you need to sweeten it add the honey after straining.
Boiling honey will destroy its nutritional benefits.

Drink only 1 or 2 cups of this per cold, you don’t need to over do this tea.

Red dates are a delicious snack. If you get seedless red dates they are good to eat daily and are beneficial for women, if you get seeded dates they have a much stronger effect, so don’t over eat those. Balance as always ☯️

Another great way to protect your Kidney meridian this winter is by wearing some lovely warm wool socks. These beauties are made from 75%wool and 25% nylon to make them hard wearing. They are hand knitted, so unlike anything you can buy in the shops. These are made by my mum 🥰 they take her a week to make, I know exactly how well made they are. My sock drawer has nothing in it but these 😉 If you’re interested in buying some for yourself or a gift, I am open until Christmas Eve.
£25 per pair in sizes small, medium and large 🧦
