***These are the words, and actions of John Barlow (not me), a brave bloke indeed***
Probably one of the most horrific things I've ever seen was this Saturday afternoon, having to undertake a car driving too slowly in the M62 fast lane just past Leeds that wouldn't move over for anyone. I decided to pull along side him in the middle lane and without exaggeration both myself and my wife thought he was dead at the wheel, he was grey with blue lips and blood coming out of his mouth.
Might seem a bit nuts to do this but you do daft things when you dont have time to think... I matched his speed which I'd now guess was maybe 20 to 30mph? Pulled in front of him and used my car to stop his. Couple of bangs along the way but got it to stop.
Jumped out and waved for all the traffic which was still moving to stop so i could get in his passenger door. Unfortunately his doors were locked so tried repeatedly elbowing his passenger window (Note to one's self, elbows don't win fights with car windows).
Luckily a tradsman in a van had a hammer and we managed to get in the Audi, the gentleman was barely breathing from obstruction with his head being slumped forward.
Fortunately we'd had a refresher first aid course at the gym recently and frantically trying to remember i tilted his head slowly backwards opening his airways. He took a deep gasp and seemed to start breathing again. Even though he was still out for the count i kept talking to him as the course says and he seemed to get some colour back.
Fortunately a few minutes later a lovely lady with far better medical training and an off duty WPC took over, they were absolutely brilliant. A doctor then shouted over from the hard shoulder of the opposite carriageway asking if he could help, he definately could. So he drove to the next junction and battled though what was now a heavily congested stand still motorway that wasn't moving. He had a defib. They worked really well on the man and he started regaining some consciousness until the ambulance arrived.
Now i wouldn't have posted this story otherwise but just I've had the absolute best news. Yorkshire Police have just called to let me know that although the Gentleman had suffered a seizure he was now stable and able to go back home with his family.
Wanted to post this because although the Police said what i did was heroic, i don't really think it was. Herioc is Firemen, Lifeboat crew and the likes, i only did what plenty of folks with half a conscience would have done.
Just seeing all the other people working together to save someone's life is a brilliant thing, especially when teamwork works. Things like this certainly helps keep peoples faith that the majority of people are decent folks.
Little bit of advice for anyone, get on a little First Aid Course and keep something that can break a car window, in your glove compartment.
