I’ve had quite a few referrals back to saddle fitters recently, lots of ponies changing shape with an increased work load after winter and/or the spring grass coming through.

While I’m not a saddle fitter, there are certain things I look out for on a horses body that may indicate a saddle may need some adjustment. With a saddle that is too tight/narrow over the withers, a lot of pressure is placed on the Thoracic part of the Trapezius muscle preventing it from working effectively. The scapula (shoulder blade) then cannot rotate backwards when the forelimb moves forward. The cranial shoulder and base of the neck work to pull the scapula forward to avoid contact with the saddle and the Triceps overwork to also pull the scapula away from the saddle, creating compensatory tightness in these areas. Center of gravity is then shifted forwards onto the forelimbs leading to reduced core engagement and lifting through the back.

Long term issues (alongside pain and negative behaviours) occur such as atrophy of the Thoracic Trapezius and neck muscles, over development of the cranial shoulder muscles, reoccurring tightness and reduced performance.

Any questions or queries about how physiotherapy can benefit your animals or the services available, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

Happy April 🌻

Appointments for April are very limited and May is starting to book up. Please get in touch sooner rather than later if you are wanting to book in 🙏

Another perk of my job (along with helping all your wonderful animals) is the exploring I get to do - I found this lovely spot last week and stopped for a quick lunch break in the sunshine☀️
