Rabies vaccine update
This news item for rabies vaccine went out on TravelHealthPro last Friday. As you may well have already discovered - both rabies vaccines we use in the UK are in short supply right now. This news items gives some suggestions as included below - BUT please read the item in full at https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/news/900/rabies-vaccine-shortage-advice-for-health-professionals
Rabies vaccine availability may occasionally be limited. During shortages, health professionals may need to:
1. prioritise vaccination for people at highest risk, including:
travellers to endemic areas for long stays
2. young children
3. individuals planning to have animal contact such as vets or animal handlers
4. consider alternative licensed regimens
5. delay vaccination briefly until stock returns – there is no need to restart courses (see interrupted vaccination schedules)
consider advising the traveller to complete their course when abroad – the ISTM Global Travel Clinic Directory lists clinics worldwide if courses need to be completed abroad
