Progress isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s quiet courage, tiny steps, and simply feeling safe enough to try.🤩
Matthew has experienced significant anxiety around leaving home. Over the past six years, he has only been out a handful of times, with school refusal beginning in 2020 due to overwhelming fear. Gradually, this led to Matthew finding comfort solely within his home environment. Even the garden, which he was able to access a year ago, has recently felt like too much, and he has been spending increasing amounts of time in his bedroom.
Over the past six years, multiple agencies have worked hard to support Matthew. Despite their involvement and efforts, progress around leaving the home remained extremely limited. This highlights just how complex and deeply rooted his anxiety has been.
Our work with Matthew has focused on patience, trust, and meeting him exactly where he feels safe. Through consistent support, relationship building, and a calm, predictable approach, we have gently introduced opportunities for engagement and confidence building, without pressure and always at his pace.
In just six weeks, we are incredibly proud to say Matthew has achieved something huge. He has come out of the house on multiple occasions. He has visited our base, watched films on the cinema screen, played pool, enjoyed time on the drums, chilled out in the hot tub and as of yesterday visited a public pool. These may sound like simple activities, but for Matthew they represent courage, trust, and meaningful progress.
To see movement after years of very limited change is an incredible achievement, not only for Matthew, but for the dedication and commitment of our team. The consistency, patience, and belief shown by staff has truly made a difference.
Moments like these remind us that progress happens at the individual’s pace, and with the right support, even the biggest barriers can begin to feel smaller.
We are so proud of Matthew and so proud of our team. We are excited to continue supporting him as he builds confidence, independence, and positive experiences beyond his bedroom 💛
