If you have every heard of Piriformis Syndrome then I know you will also know the terrible sciatic pain that comes with it. In fact up to 10% of us will suffer with sciatica at one time in our life but it usually affects people from 25 to 50 years of age.

Sciatica refers to pain, weakness, numbness or tingling in the leg. It is caused by injury to or pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica is a symptom of another medical problem, not a medical condition on its own and Piriformis Syndrome is one of those conditions.

Therefore, if you are suffering with sciatic like symptoms as a result of Piriformis Syndrome then regular and progressive stretching of this "angry" little muscle will alleviate your symptoms and continued stretching may prevent it's return.

Below are variations on the same stretch, the position you choose depends on your capabilities.

Tight hamstrings will mean that every time you bend you will be bending from the lower back. Our back is not designed to bend in this way. The "S" curves of the spine are supposed to remain in their neutral state for optimum functionality.

Your body should "hinge" at the pelvis. This natural function of the body will not be possible when your hamstrings are restricting this movement.

When you sit for prolonged periods of time whether that be at a desk or driving your hamstrings are being held in a restricted and shortened position. You will suffer with lower back pain.

Stretching these muscles daily is vital if your lifestyle dictates that you are sitting for hours on end.

The first image shows how tight hamstrings will pull on your lower and upper back every time you bend. The second shows how flexible hamstrings allow the pelvis to hinge as it was intended, resulting a significantly, if any, reduced pull in the lower back.

Whilst there are a huge amount of wonderful exercises designed to strengthen your TVA muscle, our muscles learn by repetition, repetition and more repetition. Therefore, if you want a strong TVA muscle that provides your stability, and support for your lower back you should simply do this every moment you can every day. Draw your navel towards your spine and pull your waistline in (literally as if you were doing up the top button on a newly washed pair of jeans!)

This continual action of activating this muscle and asking it to work for long periods of time will train it the way it was designed to work.

Not only will your lower back thank you but you will soon find your abdomen is flatter.

Muscular problems are not the only reason we suffer with chronic back pain. A high percentage of pain is a result of pressure on the nerve roots that leave the spinal column caused by a bulging disc. As we age it is natural that the gel within our discs begin to dehydrate and shrink causing the exterior cartilage to crack, irritating the surrounding nerves and muscles. Small tears to the outer part of the disc can produce a full spectrum of pain response, from no pain to debilitating chronic pain and will often vary from person to person.

A herniated or ruptured disc is often caused if a disc is worn or injured and the gel at its center squeezes through the outer ring. It can either squeeze from between two vertebrae into the spinal canal or into the opening from which the nerves exit the vertebrae. The nerve becomes directly irritated. When a herniated disc bulges toward the spinal canal, the pressure on the spinal nerves causes pain. This occurs most frequently with the discs of the fourth and fifth vertebrae of the lower back.

A nerve that is directly impinged will result in a sharp pain in the area and can often be accompanied by numbness in the area of the leg that the affected nerve supplies, or you may feel radiating pain along the nerve’s pathway. Since the nervous system communicates with your muscles by electrical impulses, a ruptured disc can disrupt or block this communication, which results in weakened muscles. If the weakness is severe, it could indicate a significant problem.
When you experience acute muscle weakness, you should definitely see a doctor.

When we are suffering with acute back pain our first reaction is to lie down, rest, and protect the affected area. We also instinctively back away from most movements to avoid the risk of further pain or increasing the injury.

An acute injury may require a day or two of rest, but anything more than that and you begin to inhibit the healing process.

Correct movement, even when you are still in pain, is often the most effective remedy. Extensive bed rest will only lead to weaker and tighter muscles which is often one of the main reasons for your back pain in the first instance.

Muscle spasms are the body’s way of giving you a warning sign that something is wrong with your body mechanics and there is a deeper problem. The only way to get the muscles to relax is to move with proper functionality and movement patterns. Ideally we should transfer the stress that is causing the injury or inflammation in our back to our posterior chain.

These muscles should be strong enough to take this work, if they are not then you are in a vicious cycle. This is why a strengthening and flexibility program is key for anyone suffering with back pain.
