Dance to Health

Dance to Health The national falls prevention dance programme. Building strength, balance and friendship. Falls are traumatic for people and cost the NHS £2.3 billion per year.

Dance to Health is an arts-based response to the problem of falls in the over 55s. Few people are referred to falls prevention programmes and they typically run for short (12 week) periods of time. Dance to Health is designed as a fun and sociable falls programme, centred in community venues and offering a long term and enjoyable way to stay active. Our groups are financially self-sustaining and led by PSI qualified dance artists. Our sessions are places where people make friends, improve their strength and balance, reduce isolation and rediscover confidence in their bodies. Dance to Health uses the two evidence-based falls prevention programmes, Otago and FaME, and has online classes available to all https://dancetohealth.org/book-online/, and community groups in South Wales, Cheshire, Sheffield, Birmingham and Norfolk. Dance to Health is a sustainable social enterprise managed by Aesop Arts and Society (Charity No. 1134572, Company No. 06998306) working in partnership with Birmingham City Council, AgeUK Norwich, Anchor Hanover, Extracare Charitable Trust, Hywel Dda University Health Board, Swansea Bay, Dudley Council, Walsall Council and Hereford and Worcestershire. Dance to Health is very grateful for the support we receive from Arts Council England, Coronavirus Community Support Fund - distributed by The National Lottery Community Fund, John Ellerman Foundation, Peter Sowerby Charitable Foundation, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Birmingham City Council, Heart of England Foundation, South Yorkshire Community Foundation, J G Graves Charitable Trust, AgeUK Norwich and others.

We were honoured to support the creation of the Stronger for Longer Campaign with Healthy Dudley. If you or know other ladies entering their perimenopause/menopausal stage in life, these exercises will support strong muscle and bone health as we age.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Alex Ballinger MP for visiting Dance to Health at Quarry Bank, Dudley today. Your support in promoting access and awareness of strength and balance classes, facilitated through innovative and evidence-based creative dance, is truly appreciated.

We hope you found joy in dancing with our Dudley residents, who cherish their weekly classes not only for the vital physical benefits in reducing the risk of falls but also for the enriching social and creative enhancement to their mental well-being.

Dance to Health Dudley has been made possible through the The National Lottery Community Fund and Dudley borough Council.

Finally for we'd like to thank Gina. Check out this amazing video that features her in Netherton, made with the campaign.

Gina became a Dance to Health volunteer at our Netherton class in 2023. She started as a participant and later became a volunteer. Gina has worked in finance and accounts for much of her career. As well as volunteering with Dance to Health, she volunteers for her local church and food bank. What a gem!

For day 2 of we'd like to thank Mo!

Mo joined us as a volunteer after retiring from her job as Facilities Compliance Manager for the NHS. Mo has volunteered in several Dance to Heath classes most recently in Solihull. After gaining experience and confidence as a volunteer, she has gone on to do some paid work for us as an Assistant Dance Artist.

💃🕺

‘Being a volunteer has enabled me to grow in confidence and meet new people… I am thoroughly enjoying the focus of being part of a community where professionalism, training and education is so important and with opportunities to graduate into paid work.'

Volunteering is a great way for people to gain confidence, skills and experience which can enhance your CV and lead to paid work. 🤓

We are looking for volunteers to support some of our groups in Dudley. Interested? Contact info@dancetohealth.org

It's ! We'd like to start today by thanking Julie. Julie has volunteered with Dance to Health since 2018 after retiring from her lifelong career as a mental health nurse. She’s always loved dance, especially ballet, and when she saw some social media posts about volunteering for Dance to Health, she decided to get involved.

💃🕺

‘I really enjoy being part of the DtH class, from welcoming the participants as they come in, encouraging them through the class (also having a laugh) and sitting having a coffee and a chat with them at the end. It’s great hearing the feedback from the participants saying how much they enjoy it and the benefit they get from attending. I try and help Emma any way I can so the class runs smoothly.’

In February, Julie did a fabulous job of representing our Wales volunteers when she sat on the panel during our Q and A at our Swansea Convention. 🎤

We are so lucky to have such an enthusiastic and experienced volunteer working with us. Thank you Julie!

We’re looking for volunteers in Swansea to support our Swan Gardens class. Interested? Contact info@dancetohealth.org 😀
