At First For Safety Oxfordshire Ltd - Family First Aid we frequently get asked our thoughts on choking devices such as the one pictured. .......Do they work?.... Should I buy one? I've never used one but have no reason to believe they wouldn't work (But please don't trust cheap copycat products) YouTube videos would suggest they're effective. However, it's not currently something that's carried on NHS ambulances in Oxfordshire. This could be a cost issue rather than anything else (a quick Google search prices the Lifevac at around £25) Our main concern with the product is they're bulky & therefore not something you're likely to carry around with you all the time? If a baby/child/adult happens to choke at home, in the kitchen perhaps, where the device may live in an easy access draw for example? Then great, (except why wouldn't you try back blows first if you're right there?) but if you're somewhere else & don't have the device immediately to hand you're likely wasting precious time running to get it when you could be performing up to 5 'Back Blows' (hard with the heel of your palm, between the shoulder blades) & if that doesn't work, up to 5 'Abdominal Thrusts' (from 12 months old or over only, never perform Abdo thrusts on a baby!) It's important we all know the easy to learn drill for a choking child or adult. Managing a Choking baby (0-12 months) is different - Please see in comments on our FB page, for how to manage choking baby. The other issue with these 'airway clearance devices' is that the pateint needs to be either lying flat on their back or in a chair that fully supports their head, in order that the user can apply enough pressure with one hand to ensure an airtight mask seal, whilst using their other hand to activate the plunger. The devices are not currently featured in any approved, UK first aid training manuals that we're aware of. In conclusion, we're not suggesting they don't work BUT it's vitally important people know how to perform an effective choking drill on a choking casualty as the first response. Would we invest in one, no, but it's personal choice of course. Hope this is helpful. Kind regards, The First For Safety Team. xx

I was out & about in Kidlington today & saw this 3 times in the space of an hour, (different parents). Please understand that this causes heat to build up inside the pram & the space arond baby gets hotter. Use an umbrella shade where air is allowed to circulate, but baby is kept safe in the shade: https://www.firstforsafetyoxfordshire.co.uk/family-emergency-first-aid-course

DANGER!! - During this heat wave, here's a reminder re the dangers of covering a pram - It’s only natural to want to keep baby & tots in the shade as Britain swelters, but the well-meaning gesture of covering the pram with a muslin cloth could turn the space into a 37 C+ heat trap.
Scientists performed experiments to see what happens when a pram is covered up during hot weather & recorded that it only took 20 mins for the air inside to hit temperature in excess of the 37 C mark.
Experts warn that even a light cloth over a baby’s pram can cause them to develop heatstroke. Please share to improve awareness.
The best way to shade little one is to use a clip on sun shade that allows the air to circulate under the shade & all around baby, thus preventing a build up of heat. :-)

First For Safety is distressed & extremely saddened to learn that 2 of our Fire Fighter Colleagues have tragically lost their lives at an incident in Bicester. A member of the public has also sadly died & 2 other Fire Fighters are reportedly in hospital with serious injuries. Our thoughts, of course, are for their family, friends & colleagues. The Fire Service is like a big family & we feel for everyone having to come to terms with this devastating loss.

Watch out, it's Blandford Fly time again!! Most prevalent in May/June. The flies are known for their painful bites, which most often occur on ankles/lower legs - A black, blood sucking fly & although tiny (only 2-3 mm), these pesky criters pack an evil bite that some children & adults have horrible reactions to!! Bites can be painful & may cause localized swelling, blistering, joint pain, painful swelling around the groin & even fever.
Prevention is always better than cure - Avoid bites by keeping ankles & legs covered & use a decent insect repellent.

Medical Advice if bitten:

1. Clean bite area with soap & water. Gently dry.
2. Do NOT scratch; this can lead to infection.
2. Apply cold compress to ease swelling & pain.
3. Hydrocortisone cream may reduce inflammation.
4. Antihistamine tablets can help if taken promptly.
5. Antihistamine creams are NOT recommended as they can cause skin reactions.
6. Cover large blisters with a dry dressing.
7. If legs or ankles swell, rest with feet elevated.– Swelling may last for a few days.
Professor Rod Thomson, director of public health for Herefordshire, said, “If you do get bitten, it can often feel very uncomfortable with swelling, blistering, joint pain & sometimes a high temperature. However, there’s normally no need to visit a GP.”
When to seek medical advice:
In most cases, the discomfort & other effects normally ease off after a few days. However, if you experience ongoing or severe pain or swelling, or red lines develop on the skin in the groin or armpit, or you have a fever with spreading redness or prolonged hotness around the bite, seek medical advice as these may be symptoms of an infection or reaction that may need treatment. Speak to a pharmacist or call 111. Please share. https://www.firstforsafetyoxfordshire.co.uk/family-emergency-first-aid-course

Our Story

Hi, my name's Drew Kamphuis, I'm 45 years old & a very proud Mummy of two little ones, aged 7 & 9 years. I'm MD of First For Safety: www.firstforsafetyoxfordshire.co.uk - Our 10 strong team of serving Emergency Services Professionals deliver Affordable First Aid & Fire Safety Training across Oxfordshire & surrounding counties. Around my Emergency Ambulance shifts I’m also a First Aid Instructor with over 24 years experience in the Emergency Services. As a parent i'm especially passionate about the matter of ALL parents having easy to learn Life Saving skills. We teach all sorts of fantastic First Aid & Fire Safety courses but we specialise in teaching parents & families how they could save the life of their loved one (baby through to adult) in an emergency, whilst waiting for the Professionals to arrive. Our 2 hour 'Family Emergency First Aid Course' is just £20 per person which includes a FREE Refresher Course for ALL learners when ever you/they feel ready. To keep costs down for all, sessions are normally run in the comfort of your own home between 7.30 & 9.30pm (flexible, according to your preference) whilst the little ones are tucked up in bed. (Babies are welcome on the course & we run daytime courses also) The min booking number for courses in Oxfordshire is 6 people per course. For boardering areas, Swindon, Cheltenham, Newbury etc it will be a little more. So this is how it works - Parents simply invite their friends, Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles etc, even their regular baby sitter along to make up the numbers. The max booking is normally 12 people (but with another Qualified Instructor we can teach up to 20 learners at larger venues) Discount is available on bookings of more than 11) As host you receive a Complimentary Paediatric First Aid Manual (RRP £5.99) AND, if you’re able to exceed the min 6 person booking by 2 or more, (8 learners) you receive a FREE Family First Aid Kit worth £12.99. (Current Argos price) If you're struggling to find enough people, when invited, we also teach parents at Schools, baby groups, toddler groups, Children's Centres, NCT groups & alike, so that might be a way of getting a larger group together? A lot of clients find creating an event on facebook & inviting their friends & colleagues a great way to get numbers up. You don’t have to have 6 people, lots of clients choose to have less & just pay a little more pp. Whilst the course is very informative we encourage learners to enjoy themselves & relax. Glass of wine (not for the Instructor, that would be unprofessional!) & nibbles etc. Almost like a little house gathering but with Paediatric Emergency First Aid as the focus as oppose to Ann Summers products or alike ;-) We tend to view first aid skills as being a lot more useful in an emergency situation!! My First Aid/Trauma Qualifications & Experience: Current - Ambulance Service Emergency Care Assistant (Assistant to Paramedics) 14 yrs Operational Fire Fighter. (OFRS) 3.5 yrs spent on Specialist Rescue Unit: Dealing with all complicated Road Traffic Collisions, multiple casualty/vehicle RTC's, RTC's involving HGV's. Recreational PADI Rescue Diver. 9 yrs Mummy x 2 - Professional kiss it all betterer! ;-) The course is delivered by means of power point presentation through your TV if HD compatible. If not, then simply from a lap top. It’s a very practical session with the opportunity for everyone to practice on the manikins your instructor will bring. During practical aspects your Instructor will help each learner individually. If you’d like to learn how to save the life of your Child or Grandchild then please email me (with your location) to arrange a booking at: info@firstforsafetyoxfordshire.co.uk We cover the whole of Oxfordshire and surrounding counties. Approved member of The Association of First Aiders (AoFA) - HSE approved & in association with The Royal College of Surgeons. Enhanced CRB checked, fully insured & tax registered. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you & keep safe. Drew :-)
