To All WAGA Members

Weeks go by so quickly and the Show will be here very soon – Saturday 3rd September.

Could you help by:

Entering one or more items in the near 100 categories in the Show. One item only in each category but the categories range from fruit and vegetables, flowers and pot plants, handicraft items, jams and baking. Whilst many people are saying that there is not much on their plot and that the soft fruit is minimal, there are some things in your garden, your window ledge, your kitchen and workroom if you look around which you could enter. May be you might think they may not be of Show standard, but I think you could be surprised. Remember, we have all had difficulties this year. So please do enter something and lets ensure we have a really good Show even if you think they are not good enough.
Encourage you friends to enter it too. It is for everybody in Wivenhoe and not just WAGA members.
You need to send in an Entry form to our Show Secretary Karen Shields at the Trading Hut, Rectory Road or at 5 Claremont Road, Wivenhoe, CO7 9NN by Wednesday 31st August. Then you will need to bring your items down to the Hall either on Friday evening, 2nd September between 7pm and 8pm, or on Saturday morning between 8am and 10am.
Lots of you have already supported WAGA by buying our Grand Draw tickets for which thank you very much. If you haven’t yet done so, please could you do so asap. The Grand Draw will take place on the day of the Show.
If you would like to help with arranging the Show. You could help by:
Bringing items to sell on the Market Stall – a team will be the allotments on Friday afternoon between 4pm and 5pm collecting garden bric-a brac, cut flowers and vegetable to sell on Saturday morning outside the WL Hall. The Market Stall should be running from around 11am on the Saturday.
We could do with a couple more Stewards on Saturday morning to work with the judges. No skills required, just the ability to write!
One or two more people would be welcomed for other tasks in the afternoon. Let me know if you are able to help

Finally, I hope to see you at the Show on Saturday, 3rd September. The judging takes place in the morning; the Hall will be open to the public in the afternoon from 1pm.

If feel you guilty about accumulating huge numbers of unwanted plastic flower pots and trays - as I do. Colchester Borough Council’s advice is -

“If the washed flower plot has a recycle symbol or states it is made of recyclable plastic then place in clear sack. If it doesn’t then this can be placed in a black bag.”...but you probably knew that any way.

From the Food Bank about yesterday’s donations.

Good morning,

Another fantastic week of donations of produce to the Wivenhoe Foodbank (WFB). For the first time we received Jostaberries - a cross between blackcurrants and gooseberries, all very intriguing! One of our clients took these away to make a pie! Will report back to WAGA when we have feedback from our client, should they return.
Again a wonderful crop of potatoes, swedes, lettuces, redcurrants, blackcurrants, red sweet gooseberries and larger courgettes.

Huge thank to be passed on please,

Cheers,

Angela

*Just a reminder about the Big Bee Challenge*

Big Bee Challenge (BBC Radio 2) - Mary Mitchell WAGA Committee member

Britain’s bees are running out of food. As we pave our gardens, build new roads and houses and change the way we farm, if means that the flower rich habitat that our incredible insects love is in decline. The Big Bee Challenge is a three year campaign to encourage us all to do what we can to help create a better environment for our pollinators.
WAGA are supporting the BBC Radio 2 by asking children aged 6 to 12 to be inspired, get creative and submit their garden designs on A4 paper for the local Wivenhoe Show on 4 September 2021.
These designs can be completed individually at home or within school as a topic. Designs completed in school will be collected during the last week in term and those completed at home can be submitted on the day of the Show, 4 September between 8:30 and 10:00.
A display of the designs will be on show in the William Loveless Hall between 13:30 and 16:00 at the Wivenhoe Show and winning designs will be announced from 16:15. Medals will be awarded to the winning designs in a School Assembly in the autumn term
