Today is the start of the Stoptober campaign.  Did you know that by stopping smoking for 28 days you are five times more likely to stop for good?

This Stoptober smokers in the UK are being encouraged to put their lungs first, strengthen their immune system and breathe easier ahead of the flu season.

It is estimated that more than a million people in the UK have stopped smoking since the pandemic hit and smoking prevalence among adults in England is at a record low of 13.9%.  There has never been a better time to quit.

There is a huge amount of support available through the NHS and British Lung Foundation to support people who would like to give up smoking including the Stoptober app (available on the App Store and Google Play)

Big tick and 5 stars for Fullsteams event Swim Equinox last week 👍

I entered solo and swam for roughly 3 hours with the odd refuelling break. The last hour was in the dark which was a fun new experience for me...I find sighting the buoys hard at the best of times 😂

I managed 6.2km which I pretty pleased with considering this is my longest swim in a while and actually my first race since...well school 😱!!! This does seem a bit strange to be considering
A) I love open water swimming
B) I love a good race/ event

But COVID has been in the way for a little while and there just haven’t been that many that have appealed to me 🤷🏼‍♀️

I normally have my diary full of trail runs, OCRs etc and I have missed sports events and races so much during COVID.🤞they can continue in some capacity.

This event encompassed everything I love in a sports event race.

Here’s why I’m addicted to sports events and races:
1. It gets the most out of me! I use events as part of my goal setting (I have a lot to say about goal setting but I will save it for a separate post). There is nothing better than an event for pushing me that little bit faster or further in a safe way.
2. It’s fun! I love the atmosphere of a race. Even during COVID you can get the atmosphere, the music, the excitement, the buzz.
3. I get to meet like minded people. For this event there was a really friendly and supportive environment. It’s a great way to meet people with similar interests and passions. My husband James was not swimming this event but was there to support me for several hours and had plenty of people to talk to so he wasn’t sat by himself getting cold!
4. I get a sence of achievement. Even if I don’t quite swim/ run as fast or long as I wanted I feel I have still accomplished something from just turning up and participating.
5. It inspires me. You can’t help but be inspired by those around you. Be they fast, or slow, everyone has their own story and reason for being there and are ready and willing to support and encourage others.

Exercise and physical activity is not just about the gym.

I try to incorporate more movement into my day to day life with the following:

- Whether at work or home I try to make sure I move every hour. I set a reminder on my phone or watch to get up and move and stretch every hour. This is something I really encourage patients to do. I move quite a lot as a physio but this is really important for those with sedentary jobs or lifestyles. There is an abundance of evidence that shows that an increased amounts of daily sedentary time is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality in adults. Furthermore the relationship is linear and the more time spend sedentary the higher the risk.
- I get off the train early to give me a 25min walk before and after work. I find this has the added benefit of helping me wake up in the morning and switch off after work too.
- My favourite tip has to be this though - when I am meeting up with friends and family when I can I try to incorporate some kind of movement or activity. Be that long dog walks, climbing, swimming or recently I just booked my friend stand up paddle boarding for when we met up at the park. I might be driving my friends mad, but generally I think it goes down well 🤔😂

I LOVE an obstacle course race. I was so excited to be able to finally do my favourite one again at the beginning of September.

BUT I bruise like a peach 🍑 🙈😂

Here’s how I try and limit the damage so I’m
not walking around black and blue for as long as I would be otherwise.

Please note this is what I do personally. Everyone is individual and some of these technologies are not appropriate for everyone.

And breathe... I’m off work for a week for what feel like the first time in ages. I haven’t taken more than 2 days off my full time job as a physio for the NHS job since COVID all kicked off so ready for break. I’m down at the coast so will be spending lots of time on the water and lots of time slowing things down and practicing some self care.

For the last day of cancer awareness week I want to share not just my professional insight but my personal insight into the importance of cancer rehab.

Last year my husband James was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer. Obviously this came as a shock but my clinical brain told me this was very treatable. James jumped straight into surgery followed by chemo.

Job done, move on.

Except actually it’s not that easy. It wasn’t a case of just returning to normal. For months after treatment James dealt with side effects that impacted him physically, emotionally and vocationally. We still are living, and always will, with some of the long term consequences his cancer treatment has had. It has impacted us both and the rest of James’ family.

I do believe that exercise and physical activity has played a vital role in helping James’ recovery. We will be sharing another post again soon about cancer exercise and James’ experience.

This week is cancer rehab awareness week

This is a topic extremely close to my heart ❤️

The number of people living with and after cancer is increasing. Unfortunately cancer and it’s treatment can cause a number of symptoms and long term side effects. Cancer rehab can help people manage their symptoms, and optimise the quality of life of those living with and beyond cancer.

It about optimising physical, social, psychological and vocational functioning within the limits created by the disease and it’s treatment and focusing of what matters to the patient.

Cancer rehab is appropriate for everyone! Regardless of their stage of disease or treatment.

This week if the first worldwide Cancer Rehab Awareness Week. I have been working in oncology for a number of years now and I’m really pleased to see this campaign started by to help spread the word and increase awareness about cancer rehab.

So what exactly is Physiotherapy?

This is a question I was asked recently on the profound fitness podcast.

It’s actually an excellent question as many people don’t fully appreciate the many skills physios have and the full scope of our practice and profession.

Physiotherapists help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice.

We work holistically to support people’s health and well-being and ensure we are working together with the individual on what matters to them.

We work with people of all ages and with a wide range of conditions associated with different systems in the body including but not limited to:
-Neuromuscular (back pain, sports injury, arthritis)
-Respiratory (asthma, COPD, breathing pattern disorders)
-Neurological (stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s)
-Cardiovascular (chronic heart disease, rehabilitation after heart attack)

You can benefit from physio at any time of your life be it recovering after an injury or surgery, preparing for childbirth or a sporting event, or managing a long term medical condition.

Over the past couple of years I have enjoyed getting back into swimming and particularly open water swimming. There are so many reasons I love swimming.

Swimming is a full body workout. It uses all the muscles in your body, regardless of stroke.

Water supports up to 90% of the body’s weight so it’s great was to stay active if you are recovering from an injury or illness.

Swimming is know to lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression and improve sleep.

Add to that the benefits of the cold water including boosting the immune system, improving circulation, increasing metabolism, mood boosting and you have the perfect combo!

This time of year I would normally be preparing to attend the world’s largest international gathering of clinicians, researches and scientists in the field of lung cancer and thoracic oncology at the IASLC World Conference of Lung Cancer.

I have had the privilege of attending and presenting the last couple of years as a specialist physiotherapist.

As health care professionals it is key we stay up-to-date with developments in the field,  implement evidence-based practice, learn and share knowledge with other professionals and specialists in our fields of work.

This year understandably things have been put on hold due to COVID-19, but evidence-based practice continues, many organisations are starting to offer online learning and sharing and hopefully I will be attending when this takes place virtually early next year.

Did you know that 80-90% of us will experience lower back pain at some point in our lives?
As well as being an unpleasant and emotional experience, pain can inhibit deep stabilising and postural muscles and alter our normal movement patterns.
Recovery is not automatic and it can take work to address abnormal movement, improve strength, flexibility and control.
Physio led pilates can help you to safely return to exercise and increase your fitness following injury, surgery, or can help with long term conditions and pain.

I’m not a very good runner!

Running definitely doesn’t come naturally to me but I’m learning to love it, particularly trail runs.

Hills, rocks and uneven terrain are excellent for helping to build strength, balance and co-ordination but I also love to be in nature.

It is true that nature heals 🌿 Being in nature has proven health benefits including reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of the stress hormone.

Hope everyone is managing to cope in this hot weather we are having at the moment.

Anyone who has worked with me in lung clinic will know I love a handheld fan! It’s a great tool for breathlessness management but today these temperature have prompted me to talk about something different - hot flushes!

Hot flushes and sweats are the most common menopause symptom. Some cancer treatments including chemotherapy, radiotherapy to the pelvis, surgery to the ovaries and hormonal treatments can cause menopausal symptoms, even for young in women in their 20’s and 30’s. In fact men can experience these symptoms too. Men on hormonal treatment for prostate cancer or breast cancer can also experience symptoms of hot flushes.

Scroll right for some of my top tips on managing sweats and hot flushes.
I will be sharing more tips on breathing exercises for relaxation soon and exercises that can help manage some of the other side effects of menopause.
Your doctor may also be able to prescribe you medicine to help with the menopause.
