🦷 Little Teeth, Big Smiles! 🦷

At Wild Sunflower Childcare, we know that healthy smiles start early!

Teaching children about oral hygiene is an important part of growing up, and building good habits now can last a lifetime.

Here’s what I encourage:
● Brushing teeth twice a day (morning and before bed)
● Using a pea-sized amount of toothpaste
● Learning to spit out toothpaste (not swallow)
● Drinking water throughout the day
● Limiting sugary snacks and drinks
● Regular check-ups with the dentist

Did you know? Children should visit the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday. In the UK, you can find an NHS dentist through the NHS.

Exploring feelings with The Colour Monster! 🩷🧡💛💚💙

We use these colourful monster friends alongside the story The Colour Monster to help children talk about different emotions. Each colour represents a feeling, making it easier for little ones to recognise, name, and understand how they feel.

Through stories, play, and discussion, children learn that all feelings are important and it’s okay to experience them. These friendly monsters are a great way to start those conversations!

🚗 Road Safety at Wild Sunflower Childcare 🚗

Keeping children safe when out and about is something we practice every single day at Wild Sunflower Childcare. Learning about road safety helps children build important awareness and confidence when walking near roads.

When we go on our outings, children are encouraged to:
🚦 Press the button at the traffic lights
✋ Stop at the curb
👀 Look left and right
👂 Listen carefully, can we hear a car?
🤝 Hold hands with a grown-up or hold the pushchair

We also talk about what the signals mean:
🔴 Red man means stop
🟢 Green man means go

Alongside our daily walks, we support learning through stories, conversations, and role play about road safety, helping children understand why these rules keep us safe.

By practicing these skills regularly, children learn to be aware, responsible, and confident pedestrians.

Imagination and role play are such an important part of early learning!

Role play helps children develop confidence, creativity, language skills, and social interaction as they create their own stories and adventures together.

Who will we be today? The possibilities are endless! 🌻

Cosy Reading! 📚

Creating a comfortable space where children can relax, explore books, and let their imaginations grow is so important. Our little reading nook is the perfect spot for story time, quiet moments, and discovering new adventures through books.

Reading together helps build language, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning. We can’t wait to snuggle up with a good story! 🌻

Story Time!

We brought the classic children’s book Dear Zoo to life with these hand-painted story stones. Each stone represents an animal from the story, helping little learners retell the story, build language skills, and use their imagination.

Story stones are a wonderful way to make reading interactive and engaging, perfect for story time, small group activities, or independent play.

🌷 Happy Mother’s Day 🌷

Today we celebrate the love, patience, strength and endless care that mothers and mother figures give every single day. Whether it’s the comforting cuddles, the encouraging words, the bedtime stories or the early morning rushes out the door, the little things you do mean the world to your children.

To all the wonderful mums, step-mums, grandmas and mother figures in our community, thank you for everything you do. Your love helps your little ones grow, learn and shine.

Happy Mother’s Day from Wild Sunflower Childcare 🌻

🌈 Colour Matching & Fine Motor Fun 🌈

This simple but engaging activity supports so many areas of learning for our little sunflowers.

The children match the coloured peg people with their felt beds, helping them recognise and name colours while developing their problem-solving skills. It also encourages concentration as they carefully look for the correct match.

Placing the peg people into their beds and lifting the felt covers helps strengthen fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, which are important foundations for later skills such as writing, drawing and using tools.

Activities like this also encourage independence and confidence, as the children explore, test their ideas, and celebrate when they find the right match.

Learning through play really is the most powerful way for young children to explore the world around them.

🌻 Our Daily Routine Board 🌻

A lovely part of our morning routine at Wild Sunflower Childcare is gathering around our daily board together.

The children add their own name to show they are here, helping them feel part of our little community. We change the day, date and weather, talk about the month and season, and check whose birthday is coming up next.

We also use our feelings chart to talk about how we are feeling that day, helping the children learn that all emotions are important and okay to share.

Our Golden Rules are there to guide our day too, reminding us to use kind words, listen carefully, take turns, and use kind hands and feet.

A simple routine that supports independence, confidence, emotional awareness and lots of lovely conversations.

Yesterday our little Sunflowers had a wonderful adventure at our local soft play!

It was amazing to watch their confidence shine. They climbed, balanced, crawled and explored with such enthusiasm. Some of the children took real risks and tried new things, even when they felt a little unsure at first, and seeing their pride when they succeeded was just fantastic.

Soft play offers so many opportunities for development. As the children climb, slide and move through the equipment, they are strengthening their gross motor skills, building core strength, coordination and balance. It also supports their confidence, resilience and risk-taking, all important parts of their development. The children practise problem solving, learn about spatial awareness, and develop important social skills as they take turns, encourage one another and play cooperatively.

Our Sunflowers played beautifully together and were so excited to be joined by a child from one of their groups, which made the experience even more special. It was lovely to see them welcoming their friend and sharing the fun.

After lots of climbing and exploring, we enjoyed some lunch followed by a well-earned little rest. Once everyone was recharged, we headed out for a bit of retail therapy! The children visited the toy shop where they carefully chose a small treat for themselves, while we also picked up some new resources for the setting to enjoy together.

A busy, fun-filled day full of learning, confidence building and happy little faces 🌻

🎶 Music, Movement & Confidence at Wild Sunflower Childcare 🌻

Music is a big part of our days at Wild Sunflower Childcare. We love listening to a wide range of songs. From the catchy pop of Taylor Swift to the timeless feel good classics of Diana Ross, and fun educational favourites from The Singing Walrus.

Music in the early years is so important. It supports children’s language development, listening skills, rhythm and memory. Singing and moving to music also helps build confidence, encourages self-expression and creates a lovely sense of joy and belonging. Most importantly, it makes learning fun!

Some of our favourite songs at the moment are:

If I Were a Fish by Corook –
A sweet and playful song about loving yourself exactly as you are. Its fun lyrics celebrate individuality and remind children that being different is something to be proud of.

I Love My Body by Mother Moon –
A gentle and uplifting song that encourages children to appreciate and care for their bodies, helping to nurture positive self-esteem and body confidence.

The Setting Boundaries Song by Hopscotch Songs –
A brilliant song that helps children understand personal boundaries and how to express their feelings in a safe and respectful way. It’s simple, empowering and a great way to introduce important life skills.

By listening, singing and dancing together, we create a happy environment where children can express themselves, build confidence and simply enjoy being little.
