World Parkinson’s Day takes place on 11th April every year to raise awareness of

Parkinson's disease is caused by a loss of nerve cells in the substantia nigra, a region of the brain. This results in a decrease in dopamine levels in the brain.

Dopamine is essential for the regulation of body movement. Many of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease are caused by a decrease in dopamine.
It is unknown what causes the loss of nerve cells. The majority of experts believe that a combination of genetic and environmental factors is at fault.

The main symptoms of Parkinson's disease are:

➡️ involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body (tremor)

➡️ slow movement

➡️ stiff and inflexible muscles

If you have any concerns regarding possible symptoms or need further information on Parkinson’s, you can get in touch with us by visiting our website https://www.heathcotmedicalpractice.nhs.uk/

If you're planning to travel outside the UK, the surgery can help with travel advice and information about vaccines for travel.

You must request travel advice at least 8- 10 weeks before your departure date. If you are traveling for more than one month we will need 12 weeks notice.

This is because some vaccines:

🏖 need to be given in advance to let your body develop immunity

🏖 involve a number of doses over weeks or months

The NHS is only able to provide specific vaccinations to its NHS patients for travel.

You can contact the surgery by phone or online to ask about what vaccinations you need and we will send you a pre travel questionnaire which will be passed on to our travel nurses.

The sooner and longer a burn is cooled with cold running water, the less the impact of injury and tissue damage.

✅ Stop the burn process as soon as possible.
✅ Cool the skin with cool running water for 20 minutes - Research has shown that running an affected burn area under cool (not iced) water for at least 20 minutes is the optimum time needed to help reduce pain, swelling and the risk of scarring.
✅ Do not use ice, iced water, or any creams or greasy substances like butter
✅ Cover the burn with cling film.
✅ Treat the pain from a burn with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

If you are concerned about the burn at all, call 111 for advice, or 999 if you feel it is an emergency situation.

Learn more about burns and how best to treat them on the NHS website https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/burns-and-scalds/ 💙

Today is World Epilepsy Day, also known as Purple Day. The day is a time to get people talking about epilepsy, raise awareness of the condition and show support by wearing purple.

Possible symptoms include:

💜 uncontrollable jerking and shaking, called a "fit"

💜 losing awareness and staring blankly into space

💜 becoming stiff

💜 strange sensations, such as a "rising" feeling in the tummy, unusual smells or tastes, and a tingling feeling in your arms or legs

💜 collapsing

Epilepsy is usually a lifelong condition, but most people with it are able to have normal lives if their seizures are well controlled.

Advice is available from the NHS website: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/epilepsy/treatment/

Eczema is a condition that causes the skin to become itchy, dry and cracked. Some people only have small patches of dry skin, but others may experience widespread inflamed skin all over the body.

It's usually a long-term (chronic) condition, although it can improve significantly, or even clear completely, in some children as they get older.

Many different treatments can be used to control symptoms and manage eczema, including:
- self-care techniques, such as reducing scratching and avoiding triggers
- emollients (moisturising treatments) – used on a daily basis for dry skin

Having good s*xual health is an important part of staying physically and emotionally healthy. Getting tested and treated for s*xually transmitted infections (STIs) is straightforward and confidential.

A s*xual health clinic (SHC) specialises in s*xual health, and can provide tests and treatment for many STIs. The staff at these clinics are accustomed to testing for various illnesses, so there is no need to be uncomfortable or embarrassed. A s*xual health clinic is open to anyone, regardless of gender, age, or the presence of symptoms. The clinic won't tell your parents if you're under 16 and the service is still confidential.

For more information on STIs or where to find your nearest s*xual health clinic visit our website https://www.heathcotmedicalpractice.nhs.uk/services/health-service/s*xual-health

Stopping smoking is one of the best things you will ever do for your health. Even if you’ve never tried before, or tried more than once, you can still succeed.

Here are some tips to help you quit for good:

🚭 Tell people: Letting friends and family know means they can help and support you.

🚭 Track progress: The NHS quit smoking app will help you keep track and provide daily support.

🚭 Keep busy: Reduce the urge to smoke by keeping active and exercising.

Did you know that ovarian cancer is the UK’s sixth common cancer, with around 7,500 cases per year?

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month as two thirds of those with ovarian cancer are diagnosed too late when the cancer has already spread.

➡️ Only 1 in 5 women know that bloating is a symptom of ovarian cancer

➡️ Only 1 in 100 women know that needing to wee more often is a symptom

➡️ 4 in 10 women wrongly believe that cervical screening detects ovarian cancer

Diagnosed early, ovarian cancer is easier to treat, yet too many people don’t know the symptoms. For more information, visit the website: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/ovarian-cancer/

March is .

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts to grow in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Symptoms of the condition can vary, but the most common ones include pain in your lower stomach or back that are worse during periods, pain that stops you doing normal activities during periods and pain during or after s*x.

Although there’s no cure for endometriosis, there are treatments that can ease the symptoms so that the condition does not interfere with your daily life - your doctor or gynaecologist can discuss the options with you.
