Happy International Women’s Day! 💪

To all the incredible women out there—balancing careers, families, relationships, health, and everything in between—you are seen, valued, and celebrated today and every day.

Whether you’re a mother or not, whether you’re in the thick of your career, reinventing yourself, or simply trying to make space for your own well-being—you are enough.

💜 Let’s lift each other up.
💜 Let’s prioritise our health, not just for longevity but for quality of life.
💜 Let’s remind ourselves that self-care is not selfish—it’s essential.

This is me with my mum on holiday a few years ago — the woman who somehow balanced working as a nurse while always making sure that my brother and I came first. She was there whenever we needed her, and that love, strength, and dedication shaped me into the confident woman I am today.

Today, I celebrate her and all the incredible women juggling work, family, and their own well-being. It’s not always easy, but we do it with love, resilience, and determination. I see this in my work and in my friends.
Here’s to the women who lift us up, inspire us and pave the way - —may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.

For those who don’t know, alongside my own work as a LM physician and coach, I’m also a Lead Physician at Bupa—and I’ve been lucky enough to bring lifestyle medicine into the conversation there.

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak on a podcast about healthy aging—one of my favorite topics. I don’t claim to be a longevity specialist, but I believe in keeping health simple and focusing on the basics that should be accessible to everyone.

I'm not sure if this link will work, but if you’d like to listen, copy and paste this into your browser:

I also wanted to share my inspiration...my dad 💙 He’s a retired GP and has always been a huge influence in my life. He turns 80 in a few weeks, and while he doesn’t always take my advice (😆), he’s finally started embracing some of what I speak about. I'm very proud of him!

Smartphones and social media have transformed childhood. But are they helping—or harming—our kids’ mental health?

Have you watched Swiped on Channel 4, which explored a school that banned smartphones? The results? Better focus, deeper friendships, and happier kids. Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation echoes this—excessive screen time is linked to rising anxiety, depression, and loneliness in young people with the effects being worse in young girls.

Here’s how we can foster a healthier digital culture at home:
✅ Delay smartphone use – Many experts now recommend waiting until at least 14. If you are a parent of a primary school aged child, join https://delaysmartphones.org.uk/ and sign the pledge
✅ No phones in bedrooms – Protecting sleep is crucial.
✅ Screen-free family time – Mealtimes, car rides, and weekends are great places to start.
✅ Teach digital literacy – Kids need to understand online risks, from comparison traps to misinformation.

We can’t eliminate tech, but we can create boundaries that protect mental well-being.

What are your rules around screens at home?

Children today are facing an unprecedented mental health crisis. Anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem are rising—and while many factors contribute, one thing is clear: lifestyle matters.
What can we prioritise to help our kids?

🔹 Connection – Strong, real-world relationships build resilience. Family meals, talking, and simple moments of presence help children feel secure.
🔹 Nature & Play – Time outdoors and unstructured play are vital for emotional regulation.
🔹 Sleep – Poor sleep fuels anxiety. Protecting bedtime routines and limiting screens before bed can make a huge difference.
🔹 Reducing Digital Overload – Studies show excessive social media use can negatively impact mental well-being. Mindful tech habits are key.

I hve been reading The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt - he highlights how a shift toward more screen time and less free play has deeply affected young minds. We need to rethink how we support our children’s well-being. We know ourselves how addictive the doom scroll can be. Young brains are still developing, we need to protect them.

This is a picture of a recent Mummy/son trip to London. He got a nintendo for Christmas and we have had to be quite strict about the timings as he would play on that all day and night if he could! We chatted on the way to London on the train but then he started reading his book and asked for it again on the tube. While most people were staring at their phones, he was engrossed in his book! We had a late night but plenty of connection, play and no screens for the weekend. When I asked him what his favourite part of our weekend was... Abba voyage? the DLR? Swimming at the hotel? The aquarium? The London eye? Guess what he said?.... "Spending time with you Mummy".

Our children need our attention and our time. Their childhood experiences can shape their future. If you have children remember, we never get this time back, it goes so quickly.

What Does Self-Care Look Like for You? 💆‍♀️✨
As January wraps up, I’ve been reflecting on the highs and lows of the month—because let’s face it, life is never all smooth sailing!

I didn’t stick to my sleep schedule perfectly, and my exercise plans went off track. But instead of dwelling on what didn’t happen, I’m celebrating the little things that did.

🌟 I’ve treated myself to a luxurious bath once a week—complete with a mesmerizing bath bomb that I just had to photograph before I got in! Is it art?🎨🖌
🌟 I’ve prioritized meeting up with friends who lift me up, even on long workdays when the temptation to stay home and put on my PJs was strong.
🌟 I’ve spent more quality time with my son, doing activities we both enjoy and making precious memories.

The beauty of self-care is that it ripples outwards. These small acts didn’t just help me—they made me a more present mum, wife, friend, and colleague.

Now I’d love to hear from you: What little wins are you celebrating from January? Let’s remember, self-care isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. 💖

Happy Lunar New Year!
The Chinese New Year of the Snake symbolizes wisdom, transformation, and renewal—beautiful themes that resonate with the essence of what we try to achieve at Renew Lifestyle.

Just like the snake sheds its skin, we have the opportunity to renew ourselves every day. Did you know your body is constantly regenerating? Your skeleton replaces itself roughly every 10 years, your blood cells renew every 3 months, and even your skin and hair are constantly cycling and renewing.

It’s a powerful reminder that change is woven into our very being. As the philosopher Heraclitus said, “You cannot step into the same river twice, for it is not the same river, and you are not the same person.”

Each day is a chance to reflect, reset, and grow—no matter how small the steps may feel. So... time to embrace the wisdom of the snake and commit to your own renewal, whether it’s prioritizing your health, nurturing relationships, or pursuing knowledge.

Here’s to transformation, growth, and a happy, healthy Lunar New Year! 🐍

This Friday is International Education Day with this year’s theme focusing on preserving, redefining, and elevating human agency in an age of rapid technological change.

Education is a human right—yet in many parts of the world, it’s still not accessible to everyone. For those of us fortunate to have access, it’s easy to take for granted.

One area close to my heart is health literacy. In an age where we have endless information at our fingertips, it’s vital to read critically and question what we consume. I’ve seen dangerous claims shared online, often followed by the phrase, “I’ve done my research.” But research isn’t just about reading something—it’s about questioning its validity, exploring different perspectives, and combining evidence with real-world experience.

Life isn’t black and white, and neither is education. It’s a lifelong journey of curiosity, reflection, and growth. What I learned in medical school in the late 90s is not necessarily valid today, which is why I never stop learning. My goal is to educate myself every day—whether through books, trusted sources, or conversations—and to share that knowledge with friends, family, clients, and patients.

As Hippocrates said:
"The greatest medicine of all is teaching people how not to need it."

The books in this photo are just a few that have shaped my understanding of lifestyle medicine, coaching, and the world around me. What’s a book that’s changed your perspective or taught you something valuable? I'd love to add it to my endless list!!

This quote by Epictetus is a reminder to pause and reflect. We often spend our energy trying to control the uncontrollable—what others think, external circumstances, or the outcomes of every decision.

But true peace comes when we focus on what is within our power:
✨ Our own actions
✨ Our mindset
✨ How we respond to challenges

Giving yourself the space to think about this can be transformative, and that’s where coaching can help. Coaching offers a safe space to reflect, set intentions, and navigate the areas of your life you can control, so you can live with more clarity and purpose. It is also liberating to let go of that which you can't control!

When it’s cold outside, porridge for breakfast, a soup or sandwich for lunch, and a curry for dinner is a standard day for many. But did you know you can easily sneak in at least 10 different plants throughout your day without overthinking it?

Using the example above:
🍴 Breakfast:
Start with porridge. Add:
✨ Cinnamon and nutmeg (because it's winter!)
✨ Blueberries and raspberries
✨ A grated (slightly more effort) or chopped apple
That’s an extra +5 plants already—plus way more flavor!

🍴 Lunch:
For soup (likely will have some plants in there):
✨ Top it with parsley, pumpkin seeds, or both.
For a sandwich (hopefully with some plants already in there):
✨ Add an apple afterwards.
✨ If you feel a cold coming on, grab an orange too.
That’s +3 plants added to your day.

🍴 Dinner:
With a curry and rice:
✨ Stir in some spinach/kale for extra greens. (Again hopefully already plants in there)
✨ Make a quick salsa: chop red onion, tomato, squeeze lemon, and add black pepper (bonus—it helps you absorb turmeric’s benefits! - a likely ingredient in your curry).
✨ Top it all with fresh coriander, and sprinkle on some seeds especially on a dahl.
That’s +5–6 plants at dinner.

In just one day, you’ve added 13–14 different plants to your diet, boosting variety, flavor, and nutrients—all with minimal effort.

✨ Stop thinking about restricting yourself and start adding more of what’s good for you. Your taste buds and your body will thank you! 💚

For those interested, the picture is 's Sticky Korean-style Tofu and veggie fried rice. I added some Kimchi to this when I had it again.

It’s the second Friday of January—the day when most people give up on their New Year’s resolutions.

But here’s the thing: if the changes you planned feel too hard to sustain, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It’s simply an opportunity to rethink and reframe your goals. 💡

Here are my tips for making sustainable changes that stick:
✨ Tie a new habit to your routine (e.g., stretch while your coffee/tea brews).
✨ Choose something you enjoy. Hate the gym? Try dancing, kickboxing, parkrun!
✨ Partner up—friends keep you accountable and motivated and can make it more fun.
✨ Start small. Tiny, realistic goals lead to lasting success as they are easier to maintain.
✨ Reassess and adapt. If something’s not working, tweak it instead of quitting altogether.
✨ Avoid extremes. Sustainable changes—like slow weight loss—are healthier and more sustainable long-term.

When I work with clients, I provide them with "lifestyle prescriptions" that are always SMART:
✨ Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Specific.
Think about this when deciding what you want to achieve. If something didn’t work out, reflect on the barriers/what went wrong and consider what could be changed to make it more achievable and start again.

Remember, every small step you take is progress. 🌟

What’s one change you’re sticking with this week? What changes have you made that have lasted? Share your own tips to help others!
