🧬 Can nutrition influence immune function in the skin, and help manage eczema more effectively?

This review examines the role of cathelicidin, a key antimicrobial peptide in our immune defence, and how its expression is linked to levels of the pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus in the skin and the severity of atopic dermatitis (eczema) in both adults and children.

Crucially, the paper also evaluates the therapeutic potential of vitamin D to increase cathelicidin expression, reduce bacterial colonisation, and support eczema management. Our review findings suggest that optimising serum vitamin D status may play a clinically relevant role in skin health, offering both safety and efficacy within a personalised care framework.

The effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on muscle and whole-body protein synthesis

Researchers in this study published in Nutrition Reviews report that more than 50 million people worldwide are affected by sarcopenia described as an age-associated decline in skeletal muscle strength, quality and mass. Following an extensive review and meta-analysis to investigate whether intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs) could effectively stimulate the rate of muscle protein synthesis and whole-body protein synthesis in both healthy adults and populations with health problems they concluded that n-3 PUFAs has the potential to enhance whole-body protein synthesis, no significant increase in muscle protein synthesis was noted, and that further trials are needed to explore benefits of n3-PUFA intake for musculoskeletal health. The discussion considers a range of limitations affecting the analysis, and insights for further research.

Association of Diet and Waist-to-Hip Ratio With Brain Connectivity and Memory in Aging

This study published in JAMA Network Open involved middle-aged to older adult participants to see if there was a relationship between keeping to a healthy diet for the long-term brain connectivity, memory and waist-to-hip ratio. Diets and waist-to-hip ratios were assessed at varying points over this long-term study. To achieve beneficial outcomes for brain and cognitive health in older age the researchers concluded it might be best targeted between ages 48-70. Poorer working memory and executive function was associated with higher waist-to-hip ratios in midlife

Optimal dietary patterns for healthy aging

Data from a longitudinal study (1986-2016) and the Health Professionals Follow-Up-Study (1986-2016) published in Nature Medicine was reviewed to see if long-term compliance with eight dietary patterns and intake of ultra processed foods impacted healthy aging in context of physical mental and cognitive health and reaching age 70 free of disease. The researchers suggest that diets rich in plant-foods inclusive of a moderate intake of healthy animal-based foods may overall enhance health aging and could help guide future dietary guidelines.

Association between nutrient patterns and odds of depressive symptom

Food intake assessed by 24-hour diet recall interviews over 15 years in older adults analysed intake of 40 selected nutrients including 21 polyphenols, three carotenoids, five fatty acids, nine vitamins and two minerals. Four nutrient patterns were identified. The pattern that showed high intake of magnesium, B1, B3, B5, B6, folates and a range of other plant compounds were associated with lower odds of depressive symptoms over time. The researchers concluded that the study published in the European Journal of Nutrition offers valuable insights for the potential role of nutrients for older adults.

Mediterranean Diet helps reduce body weight, BP and improved Glycaemic control in combination with time restricted eating

This recent randomised control trial published in IA&T reviewed the effects of a 12-week Mediterranean-Type Time-Restricted protocol in patients with MASLD (Metabolic Dysfunction Associated with Steatotic Liver Disease). The researchers conclude that their study corroborates the efficacy of a Mediterranean Diet by reducing risk factors such as body weight and blood pressure. The addition of Time-Restricted eating may improve glycaemic control.

The role of Histamine in ADHD

This study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine is an important read for exploring the role of histamine as a missing link between ADHD and Allergies. The paper provides a detailed historic perspective over more than 70 years and poses robust hypotheses why histamine and not acetylcholine may be the missing link. Anyone wanting a detailed review of the role of histamine should find this paper enlightening.

Diet and Food Insecurity

This study published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics is the first to show that people experiencing homelessness are at high risk of malnutrition and dietary inequalities linked to poor diet and food insecurity. This important paper could guide the development of nutrition standards to promote the health of individuals experiencing homelessness.
