Rodger Duckworth Physiotherapy Practice

Rodger Duckworth Physiotherapy Practice Not just your average physio!

http://rdphysio.com Rodger Duckworth Physio at The Grange - A team of physiotherapists with decades of experience and a mind body approach to help you achieve deep lasting healing for people at the edge of hope and despair. Established in 1995 by Rodger Duckworth who noticed a lack skilled manual therapists practicing in the area and was disillusioned with what he saw as declining standards of care throughout his experience in NHS and private practice. The practice now consists of a team of Chartered Physiotherapists, all of whom have a common belief in a “hands-on” / manual treatment approach. We are known as specialists in spinal and knee problems although each individual physiotherapist has their own particular areas of specialism which means we can offer specialist attention to suit your needs.

One person’s pain response, is another person’s trauma response. We don’t really experience pain without some sort of trauma, and your past experience will shape how you experience pain. Here’s what I mean.

For 30 years, Rodger has worked with patients facing complex chronic illnesses that seem impossible to overcome. What he’s learned is that our nervous system is like a river - it has a natural capacity to handle the "rainfall" of stress.

But when the rain is too heavy or lasts too long, we breach our "riverbanks".
Key takeaways from our latest blog:

🪟 - The Window of Tolerance: Stress isn't the enemy; it's a natural fluctuation. The problem starts when we stay in a heightened state for too long.
👤 - Thwarted Responses: If you couldn't fight or flee a past threat, your body "remembers" and builds coping mechanisms to keep you safe.
⚠️ - Adaptive vs. Maladaptive: What saved you as a child might be causing your physical pain or dysfunction today.
💚 - True Healing: Recovery requires looking deeper than just the mind—we must treat the entire physiological system, including the organs.

Healing isn't just about managing symptoms; it’s about moving from a state of survival back to a state of flow.

Your relationship with your Therapist, Practitioner or Clinician may have a profound impact on your healing. And it comes from a point of the need to feel safe, trust and knowing they have your back. And that flows both ways - your healing depends on it greatly. Here's what I mean...

When it comes to our health, as it is with life, EVERYTHING is connected.

For too long, many experts would say ‘no brain, no pain’ - to which I like to respond, ‘no heart, no brain because - de@d!’ We need to move away from the cartesian split. Here’s why…

Do you dissociate?

Dissociation is when we lose connection with our physical self and from a somatic point of view when we lose contact with the felt sense of what is going on inside our bodies. Remarkably, we all disassociate every day as a coping mechanism. In those moments when we think, sorry, what did you just say?

So what does dissociation say about how we deal with Trauma?

If you don’t feel safe, healing will be difficult. But feeling safe is not something that you do, and it’s not something that you think - it is a felt experience. Here’s what I mean…

Being told you might need a scan or surgery can feel overwhelming. Understandably, people want certainty – a clear answer about what’s causing their pain and how to fix it. But when it comes to back pain, shoulder pain, and many chronic pain conditions, the reality is more complex.

Patients often assume that MRI or ultrasound results are the most reliable indicator of what’s happening in their body. But research shows something surprising:

👉 Over 50% of people with no back pain at all have disc bulges in their lower spine.
👉 Over 60% of pain-free adults have torn or fully ruptured shoulder tendons, while still functioning normally.

This begs the question, ‘do you really need surgery?’ and if not, what’s the alternative?

Pain is sh*t, messy and far more complex than conventional thinking would have you believe. There is a growing trend to proclaim that reprocessing your nervous system is the answer. If only it were that simple…

"I have received craniosacral therapy for years, so I was keen to find a practitioner who truly understands the interconnection between mind and body rather than offering standard physiotherapy alone.

Rodger’s empathy and his own experience as a patient himself make the sessions feel like a partnership rather than a one-way treatment.

I would highly recommend him, especially if you have been struggling with long-term physical problems – sometimes the cause isn’t purely structural but something deeper within."
