Hallux Valgus (Commonly Known as a Bunion)

Hallux valgus is where the big toe begins to deviate towards the second toe. Over time, this causes the joint at the base of the big toe to protrude outward, often resulting in pain, inflammation, and difficulty with footwear.

Common Symptoms:
• A visible bony bump on the side of the big toe joint
• Pain, swelling, or redness around the joint
• Difficulty walking or wearing certain shoes
• Stiffness or reduced mobility in the big toe

How We Can Help:
Our experienced podiatrist, Kathryn, provides personalised management plans for hallux valgus, which may include:

✔️ Footwear assessment and advice
✔️ Tailored exercise and strengthening programmes
✔️ Biomechanical assessment and potential insoles to aid function
✔️ Onward referral for surgical intervention

Whether your bunion is in the early stages or causing ongoing discomfort, timely intervention can significantly improve your mobility and reduce pain.

Book an appointment with Kathryn today and take the first step toward more comfortable, pain-free feet.

When you leave your boots outside in the cold, they don’t just get frosty - they get vengeful.

Cold, damp footwear = a perfect recipe for chilblains, numb toes, and unhappy feet.

Bring your shoes inside, dry them out, and make sure they are warm again before you put them back on!

Can kids see Podiatrists?

Yes!

There are many reasons children attend podiatry appointments. Podiatrists certainly don’t just treat adults.

🐨 Verrucae
🦄 Sweaty feet
🦋 Heel pain
🦖 Ingrowing toe nails
🪼 Concerns about walking style
🦦 Trouble getting school shoes
🐼 Reassurance

These are just a few of the reasons children come and see us.

Half term is the perfect time to pop in and get those little feet checked over.

I will always be gentle and encouraging. I love helping and reassuring the young patients who come and see me.

Oh and I have stickers, lots of stickers 😁

Get in touch today to make an appointment.

How important is footwear in preventing knee, hip and back pain?
The choice of Your footwear can have a big impact on the function of your knees, hip and back, not just your feet and ankles.

👠High heels can lead to tightening of the calf muscles, altered weight bearing onto the front foot, and fractures and sprains if the wearer falls or twists awkwardly.
🥿Very flat shoes can aggravate plantar fasciitis, where a small heel may be helpful, and shoes with a poor foot bed or insufficient padding in the sole can cause metatarsal pain.
👟Trainers that are past their best may no longer hold the heel in a position of optimum alignment, and a floppy heel cradle and a collapsed arch support can contribute to knee and hip pain when running as the foot may over pronate.

🔸Certain foot issues can be alleviated through osteopathic assessment and treatment, while others may require the specialised care of a podiatrist.
We have Footsmiths podiatrist clinic at Oundle osteopaths on Fridays.

If you have a problem with your feet please feel free to contact us to book an appointment. 📞01832 272527.
