The reason why kids with stoma was established
Three years ago in October our daughter day came into ur lives, The same day at 11pm she were rushed to a specialist hospital as you could not pass stool, ur stomach was as hard as a rock and turned purple and needed emergency stomach evacuation as we were given the scare of our lives. The battle to save her life began as she was then rushed to UNTH Enugu for an emergency surgery where we heard what the doctors called “in perforated anus”, this brought a whole lot of scare and panic for us your parents and family members at large. The doctors then told us that at 2days old, you were way too tender for a major surgery and will have to wait till you were 6months and above to undergo such surgery. So the only option was to create a colostomy hole( a Stoma) on your stomach so she would be able to open her bowls.( will share in details about the stoma and experience later) Thanks to Doctors and Nurses at UNTH.
I had to go through all this, it was difficult considering I had her through CS… thanks to all My wonderful family members who dropped all they were doing to be there and support, I can never thank them enough in this life time 🙏🏾.
At first, I had so many questions to ask God as humans that we are but this became a learning process for everyone around who knew what was going on. Till then, We never knew such conditions existed and this became a learning process for us your parents as we learn more about this condition and also realised that it’s actually not common(people who are going through it don’t speak about it because of how some people in the society viewed it, I was actually told that I am cursed.
Now let’s fast forward to 2020, we relocate to the UK where she finally had her corrective surgery and everything is normal, she now go to toilet just like every other child…. Super active and always happy. Thanks to the doctors and nurses at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and also friends who were supportive.
There we realised we have to create awareness for kids with stoma in Nigeria and with help from Birmingham children hospital we provide stoma bags and kits to kids with stoma and financial support as well.
Your support will go a long way.
